I'm surprised you didn't find the answer in the manual but I'd be even more surprised if you didn't find it at http://www.toppy.org.uk/

Very helpful, sometimes its nice to get a step by step guide of people who have done it themselves , rather than reading a manual.

I write manuals for a living (amongst other things) and throw my hands up in despair when we put a lot of effort into making sure that the manual correctly (and hopefully easily) documents the use of a product and people still phone up to ask "how do you do X, Y or Z" only to be told "read page N, M or O"!

Oh me too - the manual is only the point of last resort when either something goes REALLY wrong or after trying every knob, button and command option available in every permutation you still cannot stumble upon how to make it work so have to give in and see what the folks who designed it actually intended (though a few calls to the helpline or posts to a bulletin board probably precede the moment when you finally dig out the plastic bag from the box in the loft that contains the manual)

Well if we all read manuels and there for didn't ask questions on forums, there would be no forums, would there. As there are forums, I shall continue to ask for peoples advise.

I hope you use a spell checker.....

EDIT: actually, though, that wouldn't have helped in this case....

OK, out of the goodness of my heart I googled for a Topfield manual and can confirm that the instructions for what you want to do are on page 53. You either should have or need to get a program called altair.exe for the PC end in order to connect.

Knowing now that the keyword to google for is "altair" it's then possible to google for "altair site:toppy.org.uk" which, amongst other things, leads to:

Just a couple of comments on manuals:

1) Many manuals are very poorly written and uninformative.
2) I, like a number of others am dyslexic and find densley written material such as a manual difficult to follow. Fortunately many of us are good practically, but are more likely to seek other avenues of help where necessary. Hence the seemingly obvious questions in forums or to tech support.

Transferring programs from the Toppy:

1) Download Altair, install and run it. Plug the USB connection in and make sure that the Toppy is on. The Altair window is like an old style ftp program (i.e. ws_ftp) with two panes of directory listings, toppy on the left and pc on the right.

2) Go into the 'Data Files' folder on the Toppy, highlight the file that you wish to transfer. Select the target folder on the pc and press the arrow in between the panes to transfer the file.

3) You can play the .rec files directly with Elecard MPEG Player.

4) If you want to play the files in WMP or Winamp or similar or want to burn to DVD, the first step is to create an mpeg file.

You can use either Project X (create an .m2p file and rename it to .mpg) or VideoReDo to do this but it is useful to then run the resulting file through PVAStrumento to remove any errors in the file. Both Project X and VideoReDo can edit the file to remove tv ads. There is a problem with the audio stream in CH4 and possibly some other channels programmes. VideoReDo selects the correct stream automatically, but Project X needs to be told which stream to use for CH4 - otherwise you will get a silent recording.

The mpeg files can be burned t dvd with many dvd burning apps.

thanks IKB

i have downloaded altair 1.250.
when i run it, it displays the computer stuff on the right and a basically blank panel on the left, with 'turbo off' shown in very faint text, and a few shaded icons at the top which i can not access. Basically nothing happen.
When i connected the toppy to the pc, i got a message telling me that 'new hardwarehad been detected' and that did i want to install the software from a cd to support the new hardware. Obviously i have no cd, so i just ignored this. Any ideas how I can get the altair thing to recognize whats on my toppy and do i need to do anything to the toppy other than turn it on?

many thanks

I seem to recall the same message when I installed Altair and I probably opted to let it 'install from CD'. However it didn't actually request any CD, so presumably found what it needed was already present. If you can get back to the same message, it may be worth trying the same.

You need the usb drivers for the Toppy.

Uninstall Altair, download this file:

Topfield Windows Applications Setup 1.0.4.zip

Select TF5xxx series when asked, then select:

Topfield USB Device Driver
Altair
TFDN USB

and finish the install. When you plug the Toppy in next time, Windows should find the drivers and allow Altair to connect.

I have just gone through the excercise of connecting to the toppy via usb today.

I found the the zip file that had the altair program also had the USB drivers.

Upon pushing the USB cable into the laptop, you are prompted for the drivers. At this stage, "browse to where you have unzipped the files, and the drivers will be loaded.

The driver files are TfBulk.inf and TfBulk.sys.

Job done.

Is there a known problem where when you copy a file from the toppy to the PC, on the PC it shows as 0kb when the copy finishes?

When I tried a different file, it copied fine??!!

What is the filename on the Toppy?

If it has one of the special characters like : or ' this will cause that problem. Simply rename the file before you transfer it.

It was Dragon's Den.

Thanks 4 the Expl.
