I think so. I'd love to see some current episodes of ER coming out of the US (HD or otherwise), if anyone can deal, let me know

T183 is correct in saying that there is no legal way in downloading copyright material for free

I would wait until next year for it to come to the UK

The files are 350MB for a 42 minute show because they are MPEG4 transcoded files from HD captures from USA TV. They are not HD resolution but they still look good on an SD TV because the original source is such good quality.

You can't legally download SDTV files of US TV shows at the moment, never mind HDTV ones.

SDTV content is widely available via peer to peer file sharing systems such as BitTorrent. This is not generally the case with HDTV files, which are so large as to discourage people from sharing them over P2P. HDTV files are generally posted on usenet (newsgroups).

Yeah that is what I thought just a HDTV rip I have seen some that the file size is 700mb that might be HDTV. When it comes to TV shows personly I do not care about it being legal. There are so many shows that UK tv does not get.

Would you normlly break the law because things are not available to you?

They are still captures and re-encodes from a HD source but a higher resolution than the 350meg versions. They are still below HD spec and over compressed but more suited to viewing on the larger HD display than their smaller counterparts.

Sorry, I don't buy that. People that download do it because it is easy and they think they can get away with it.

There are many reasons to download. I only do it a) if my recording equipment has SNAFU'd and I misses an episode or b) it's a season/series not yet showing on UK TV or available here to buy. I hate waiting a year to find the resolution season end cliffhangers!

there is some software called HD-BETA.R which allows you to capture the actual data-stream for the HD Broadcast.... removing the protection is currently being worked on. From what I've seen of it all, should be on the net by the end of Jan-Feb... Expect it to be mainstream mid next year... just keep your ear to the gound on certan newsgroups and on certain forums....

I used to download the High Definition version of American Idol (Season 4) that was on earlier this year (2005). A 1 hour show was about 4 gig. It was 720p and the picture quailty was excellent. See here, there's a few galleries of images. Hopefully I'll be watching the brand new season 5 starting in January 2006 in HD also.

There are 720p and 1080i downloads of the shows out there, along with the original transport stream captures too. However these files are large which is why there are also smaller files available, which most people get.

it is easy, and you can get away with it,

but i would not do it, if i did not have to wait so long for shows.

i am not lucky enough to live in an area that can give me more than 2mb bb, and i dont want to waste my bandwidth on downloading

I think downloads shows is not that bad just face it. If the show is on DVD I would buy it but shows that are kept away from the UK for a long time like lost, veronica mars ETC I just download it is silly to wait. People that download shows are not really taking anything away from the show makers and are actually giving them more publicity.

Even the 350MB HDTV rips are still very good and have a higher res then SD. The 700MB ones usually contain the uncompressed 5.1 soundtrack. Hence the size increase.

I wonder how long before TV shows are available for download legally, on a pay per view basis?

If we can do it with music then why not TV. The files are bigger, but broadband connections are getting faster too.

I think there would be a lot of people out there willing to pay a bit extra to see ABC pace Lost episodes - with no ads!

Well US residents can already get selected content via iTunes although the resolution is not really upto scratch and if you are going to pay then buy the DVD boxset

There is still a long long way to go before any country gets access to legal content before it's broadcast on their networks simply down to the billions made by the rights owners and no matter how bad piracy gets profits will still be made. For all the complaints about music piracy the big boys still make money!

What if a show is never meant to be shown in a particular country? Still ok to download?

What if everyone downloaded? How would local tv stations exist if everyone is downloading?

People in America have been downloading and watching The X Factor. I don't know if it's OK for them to do that but they have anyway (more fool them? ). This has had no effect on the viewing figures and Shayne Ward having the Christmas number 1 single.

This is the old 'home taping is killing music' argument (remember that?). Not everyone wants to download and it's useless for live interactive programmes, like sport or when votes are needed (unless the programme is streamed live via the internet). Local TV stations don't make the popular, most watched programmes we're talking about (eg. 'Lost', etc). It's the big national TV stations and film studios.

At the end of the day, I don't really care about the people who are getting upset about others downloading and watching. There's too much out there for me to download (even on 8 mbit). I download what I want to watch and that's it, leaving the rest. I've only got a certain amount of hard disc space and blank media - and time to watch all that stuff anyway. So the simple answer to all those questions is 'don't worry about it'.
