Can anyone answer my question?

Are any world cup soccer matches going to be broadcast in high definition next year? If so by whom and how many?

Soccer, yuk!

As published on DS and talked about here (did you do a search?) the bbc plan to show WC games in HD on a trial basis. What that means is you MAY be able to watch it via Sky HD, Cable HD and on terrestrial in London if you have suitable equipment

In other european countries, the SWC will be shown in HDTV in Germany (Premiere), probably France (TF1 and France Television) and it's discussed about it in Italy too (if SkyIT will be ready with the new receivers and services). All over europe the SWC will be available in HDTV by the paneuropean channel HD2, but for venue holders only.

It will be on France I've watched an HD trailer for TPS's HD service and they promote (if my French is up to it) all the games in HD.

Good news, the bbc are in talks with telewest and sky with regards to showing the world cup in HD

Well footy fans I think there might be room for a little cautious optimism for the BBC is making positive noises about screening the World Cup in high definition. The corporation has confirmed to HDTVUK that it is in talks with both Sky and Telewest and that its stated aim is to trial top-level HD sports during the summer.

That is very interesting.

I wonder how many people would be interested in early adoption of a Telewest or Sky HD product if it was confirmed that the World Cup would be broadcasted in HD?

Sounds like a carrot that TW or Sky may be too tempted to resist.

Ive more or less decided against getting SkyHD until Ive moved into a proper home.. and I'll probably watch most of the World Cup games in the pub but I know that a HD World Cup may prove just as attractive as the majority of HD channels announced by Sky!

For a sure fire success Sky should get the BBC to show Word Cup footy in HD, immediately followed by Sky A Bit of Blue 4 The Dads HD channel.

Sets and beer sales to rocket.....

It's a bit like saying Motorsport. What kind. Football is a generic term.

I would have thought that large pub chains and possibly even cinemas would fall over themselves to show World Cup football in HD.

Actually no, it's quite specific - it's a game where the ball is in most contact with the foot.

Therefore football.

If the yanks want to steal the name for their own version of rugby where the big butch players have to wear padding in case they hurt themselves then that's their own fault.

Except it's a lazy british word - public schoolt toffs or whatever you want to call them used "soccer" and "rugger" instead of Association Football and Rugby Football.

I´m pretty sure that the BBC will show the games in HD. They have probaly three month between Sky HD start and the world cup to decide what to do. No panic on the run for the bbc cause they get it in HD anyway, no extra order and three month in this business like a year in the real world.

I can't see why any pubs would care about HD ? People will go to the pub to watch and socialise regarless of the resolution of the screen they are watching......
