Saint Etienne 'Tales From Turnpike House' US release
You can hear the album here.
I don't know what anyone else thinks, but the chance of some new Etienne tunes was a bit hard to resist. Had to say I think the Yanks are getting a raw deal. Missing (maybe for this reason) are the quintessentially English 'Relocate' (with David Essex), and the instrumental 'Birdman Of EC1'. Replacing them are 'I'm Falling' - sounds like the hook was written by (or for) Jem, listen and you'll see what I mean. 'Oh My' - hey if Glitter-esque riffs are good enough for Rachel Stevens, and suitably 'dinner-party controversy' conversation material, throw this album on the coffee-table and shock the neighbours. Sounds like it's trying too hard to be a swirly-spangly Goldfrapp-y type noise with all the breathy vocal harmonies thrown in to boot. 'Dream Lover' - another of those puzzling odysseys that really surfaced on 'Tiger Bay', knocked the middle out of 'Good Humour' and litter themselves throughout 'Sound Of Water'. Why when they can write such stonking pop tunes like 'Join Our Club', 'Stars Above Us', 'Lightning Strikes Twice' and 'Action' that are so simple and catchy, do they produce B-sides like this to pad the albums? I'm not against a change of pace, I like 'Side Streets' and 'Archway People' and songs like that, but some tracks meander along. I know it wouldn't be the Etienne without the full spectrum, but I just want the balance tilted a little further. Give me pop and give me it now!!! ![]() Edit: Okay, 'Last Orders For Gary Stead' is still on there, I didn't notice it. |

Honestly, when they're good, they're embarassingly good.
