Cheapest mobile calls to the US?
Damarr

Hey folks,

I'm looking for a relatively cheap tariff to the US which doesn't involve a high monthly fee. A friend of mine has wants to call some buddies in the US on a regular basis, but T-Mobile and O2 both charge over 90p a minute, unless you subscribe to one of their packages and then take an additional international option, in which case the price drops to 10p a minute, but the base fee is over £15 a month, so that nullifies any savings on the actual call.

A smaller subscription fee tailored to calling abroad in conjunction with cheaper calls would be quite useful and he doesn't intend to use it for UK calls. Is there a happy medium on any other provider?

How long are you planning to call the US a month? If its over 15 Mins, then getting say, a T-Mobile Contract on Free Time 750 £13.99 a month plus £2.50 for International Option = £16.49 a month. Base. Then calls at 10p a min after that.
or
Call at 90p a min, which would cost you £9 for just 10 mins!

So if you are calling enough then surely the £16.49 base is worth it? As i know of no "happy medium".

Find a tariff that has low charges to 0870 numbers and use a diversion service. I have a T-Mobile tariff (on Orange) that charges 10p per minute peak and 5p off peak. I call the 0870 number who then in turn connect me to the US (or abroad) at no additional cost.

FYI - The service I use is a non-subscription service called 'Just Dial' and the number is 0870 794 0000. Can't guarantee that it will work on all networks though. Plus it only works on weekdays although I'm sure that there are other companies offering a similiar sevice 24/7.

Hope this helps.

I use Orange 'Just Talk' pay as you go service, it's 15p a minute (cheaper than BT!)

Landline wise, I use www.quip.co.uk it's about 4p a min to the USA.... I believe Quip also works via a mobile phone....

In the end I came over to America for 6 months.... it's cheaper to see my girlfriend than all those high phone calls!

couldnt you use something like onetel (www.onetel.co.uk) for 3p a min to the US, its 0800 access so it depends if your mobile charges for 0800

also orbital, how did you get an extended visa for the US?

I didn't know about the onetell... I'll try that when I'm back in Blighty.

As for getting a visa, well you need to fill out several forms, mostly what info is required is:
1/ Do you have a job to come back home to?
2/ How much money do you have for your trip to the US? (they need solid proof of your financial status)
3/ Do you have a reason to come back to UK? (mortgage, job, relatives, wife, kids, etc)
4/ If male and aged 16-45 they now ask if you're a terrorist, been in any wars, have experience in nuclear or biological weapons etc etc

Finally if you need to call the US embassy in London (they don't seem to reply to letters or emails) you MUST pay 1 pound 75pence a minute !!! (sorry no pound sign on this US comp!)
So if you apply for a visa, have money, a good reason to come home and it's good to have a contact in America with a home address you can be contacted at. Check out the US Embassy site http://www.usembassy.org.uk - there are tons of pages of info and many contradictory stuff to read here !

I got a B2 extended stay visa which lasts 10 years and allows stays for 6 months at a time in America, this can be extended to 9 months or more if you have a good reason to.....

To which I'd answer: "No, I'm no longer a terrorist. I've been in one war, The War Against Terror against you American devils - which i've been watching on Fox News Channel BTW. And yes I know how to make a nuclear bomb if that's of any help? Now let me in!"

Either that or I'd lie about my age by forging my passport and other documents. I'd then say to them that I couldn't possibly be a terrorist as I'm a 46 year-old woman.
