I know not everyone rates the Movie, but if anyone wants to watch it (and is up early enough) it's being shown early on Christmas Day Morning at 8:30 on UK Gold (repeated an hour later on +1)

Sounds like the idea thing to get us all in the mood for The Christmas Invasion

I didn't really like the movie all that much... only because i found some of the acting and the Americanisms pretty grating... but I reckon it should be seen for the amazing send-off Sylvester McCoy got. He gave the performance of his Doctor Who career during the opening minutes!

Assuming it isn't a Peter Cushing one!

No it's the recent one with Paul McGann.

I know a lot of people don't like it, but I don't think it's as bad as it's reputation. It is a bit Americanified (if that's a word lol ) but I think under other circumstances Paul McGann could have been a very good Doctor. I know it's not brilliant, but if I'm up in time I will probably watch it (have a feeling it will be the 9:30 showing if any though)

I think if season 2 of Dr.Who is as big a sucess as Dr.Who season 2 then everyone would love to see a new Dr.Who movie by the BBC anyone agree ? I for one am a massive fan of Dr.Who and im pleased paying the licence fee for just Dr.Who really it seems to have brought many bbc and anti-bbc people together which is good.

I am sure a certain Michael Grade is eating his words after sticking the boot into it back in the 80's.

Would love a movie as long as the Yanks didn't get involved and dilute it with the same kind of rubbish we saw in the 96 one.

I agree - and I know exactly what you're talking about. Believe me, I know.

Apparently, RTD is keen to do a movie with the current Doctor.

It was a shame that Paul McGann didn't get to do anymore television Doctor Who because I really liked his incarnation; thankfully BF has given us a little more.

DOCTOR WHO THE MOVIE with DAVID TENNANT is certain.

December 2008.

That's my guess.

Grade certainly goes overboard with his whinging about who, but he may have a bit of a point about the late 80s. I am a diehard who fan but even I admit some parts of the trial season and mccoys 1st year are so bad they're almost unwatchable. (Ironically mccoys final year is one of my favourites though).

Grade may have even helped the show in the very long run.

One of the problems with doing a movie about the time war, is that I'd assume it'd need major money thrown at it and that may inevitably require the yanks getting involved.

I've said it before, but the McGann incarnation could be explored fully in the future. It hasn't been used up yet, so he could in theory reprise his role for a Time War movie, or better still, a few seasons before the time war commes along. It would also naturally extend the life of the series, as the number of incarnations i sfast running out.

I think McGann showed enormous potential as the Doctor; it was a real shame we never got to see a full series with him in the role.

The regeneration limit is a none-issue - all it takes is a stroke of the writer's pen. In fact, I'm sure I can hear a faint scribbling sound as I type this...

If they want to throw some money in the pot to make the movie fine but don't give the Yanks any creative control or influence otherwise we will get another TVM.

Perhaps they could be described as "The Enemy Within?"

In modern Doctor Who figures the TVM received the worst Audience Appreciation index in the last 16 years.

There are many aspects of the TVM which were great...McGann being one of them along with the effects etc..but the script was truly awful. That is why if a movie is ever made let them part with their cash but have no other involvement in the plot etc otherwise we will end up with the Doctor originating from Hollyoaks or something equally as daft.

Didn't they put it up against a Roseanne finale or something?

Anyway, it was the final episode of a programme that was huge at the time so it never really stood a chance.

Thankfully - or I doubt we'd have the RTD version we have now.

That was in the US. The figure of 76 is for the UK.

Awful TVM. I suspect people would have begrudgingly watched any subsequent series with an air of "WTF have the Americans done to this?" - I generally feel DW serves everyone better when it's being made for a UK audience.

The main thing about a movie for me is that it doesn't have to be the current Doctor in the role. After all, any story is a stand alone, and not part of the series as such. The film can postion itself into any time line it chooses. The McGann/Eccleston changeover could be one theme used. But with so many alternate histories out there through the books and audio series, anything is feasable.
Go on, Doctor Who-Shada the Movie.
And it would be a nice "pension" for any actor who fancied another crack at the role, whilst the series continues with it's Doctor.... and then in 27 years when David Tennant gives up the tv role, he can make a film every year, having taken over from Eccleston or McGann (or Peter Davison, who one day soon is going to morph into William Hartnell).
Just a thought.

Agreed, the production in itself sounded like a shambles. Ex. producer philip segal implies on the dvd that eric roberts was forced on them by high ups at universal and no one on the ground of the production wanted him. Incredible. Segal may just have been trying to cover his own back, but if that's true I think everyone involved should have known it was a disaster waiting to happen.

Although the TV movie wasn't as good as it should've been I think we say enough of McGann to see he would've been an excellent Doctor, more in keeping with the traditional approach than Eccleston was.

Listen to the Big Finish CDs to hear how good he is!

I'm still a bit disappointed they didn't get him for the new TV series, as "fantastic" as Eccleston was. But I think Tennant might well be better than both of them!

Any promotion of DT's portrayal of the Doctor is a good thing in my book.

P.S. where is Eileen these days?
