It was fascinating reading the American forum - I felt quite at home:
a) bias judges with obvious favourites
b) a contestant who was beautiful to watch when dancing but their backstage behaviour is strange and likely to make them unpopular.
c) a contestant who has already had dance training and how unfair that is to the other competitors.
d) the music choice can be inappropriate for the type of dance.
e) the voting system needs a complete overhaul.

I'm sure there are many more similarities.

Re. videos of DWTS2. Am I right that they are not yet on the site and that's why I can't view them.

That's exactly it...but trust me - Raphael is working like mad to get them up and running. Although I think I pretty much BEGGED him not to put Master P up...his partner danced her heart out, like she had 10 engines inside all running at once. I could BARELY tolerate him...but will if it means seeing the gem of a dancer Ashly DelGrosso is.

Don't worry about the paid version of Real Player...the free one is more than adequate!

Will be on again after the results show and will leave an analysis for you to read in the morning. Shame that Ashly (and quite possibly, her professional reputation) are going to suffer because of someone ELSE's piss-poor attitude...

That's not right.

Cheers!

Cats....I'd be in a swoon too if I got to dance with the Wonder From Down Under...that bedroom voice alone would be enough to make my knees go weak!

As for their dancing...they finished in a tie for second with Giselle Fernandez (damn that girl is IN SHAPE..) and Jonathan Roberts (The American Smoothie) and Tatum, to quote Len Goodman directly..."Knocked my socks off!" She really got it together when it counted most...

The British public has asked...and Raphael has delivered! All dances from week 1 in their entirety are now up on his site.

Dances To Watch: Drew and Cheryl's Cha-Cha-Cha
Giselle and Jonathan's Waltz
Tony and Stacy's Waltz
Anna and Jerry's Cha-Cha-Cha
Nick and Tatum's Waltz

I'd add P Miller and Ashly's Cha-Cha-Cha to the mix...but only because of her. As I've said before - she's young , incredibly explosive and talented...and it all came out that night.

Have fun, and debate away! but at all times, have fun! *LOL*

Cheers!

FANTASTIC!!!!!!

These are now working perfectly, without need to buy new Real Player or whatever. Thank you so much for the effort taken to put them up.

I must say, the American version of the show is IDENTICAL to our version. The set the same, the back-room is the same, the "tess" character says the same lines. They even have the same British bloke saying"and now for the judges scores".

I was also very impressed with the "Bruce" character. Was expecting brash American, but actually not an interruption in sight.

Please can Raphael put up all these dances every week?

Just got through watching George Harrison - what a suave performance! I was very impressed - I loved the moment where Edyta stood still and he did his fancy footwork! And Len only gave a 5! I was so shocked! hehe Yay - the drama is back

EyesofFire, thanks so much for the link....because I just finished watching a couple of the performances.

The videos were so high quality, it totally makes up for the fact that I can't watch it on TV. It's like I didn't miss out on a thing at all! Even the judges comments, judges scores etc were uploaded as well, I have to thank Raphael!

I have watched Tia's, Tatum's and Giselle's Waltzes. 3 amazing and enchanting waltzes, enough said. The song that Tatum and Nick were dancing to sounded familiar to me, I could swear that one of the couples in SCD this series were dancing to that song!
Oh wait a minute....I just remembered, wasn't it the song that Bill and Karen danced their last dance routine to?( the last dance before they were knocked out of the competition)
Ai Ling

So the male celebrities were doing the ChaChaCha and the female celebrities were doing the Waltz. The most basic Latin and the most basic Ballroom dance

Yes!

It goes like this.....'What the world needs now.....is love....sweet love....'

I didn't know the title of the song at first, or the lyrics, but I googled it and yes that is the song

Got a chance to look at the clips and yes, I'd agree with Len that Tatum and Nick did a really good and lovely to watch waltz. I think too that the right dance (Drew's cha cha) won with the judges.

All this and - Nick & Lena AND Burt Bacharach...
heaven....

Regards and thanks to Raphael.

And me! I just got through watching all the clips and I can't believe that song was last! I preferred B&K's version though.

Thanks so much to EyesOfire for posting the link! I am so thrilled (and I'm sure my American guy will be thrilled too that he won't have to tape them for me!)

I really enjoyed watching it - was strange seeing all the Waltzes be the American Smooth though - I started out screaming "do the waltz" to the first few until I realised

I really liked seeing George Harrison... also liked Drew & Cheryl... & Giselle & Jonathan.. & Jerry & Anna.

I thought P. Miller really looked like he couldn't care less or really didn't have a clue what he was doing - and he didn't even wear the right shoes!!!! He didn't lift his foot off the floor once - will be waiting to see his improvement next week!

Thanks again to King Raphael and the Duchess of Dance EyesOFire for the links.

Well, that was a entertaining first week. I apologise in advance for this rather male and Cha Cha centred discussion, but when I started typing this there was actually daylight outside. It's now much later than I anticipated. I guess I'll have to be more economical with my thoughts.

Drew Sashay

That was a superb eye-catching Cha Cha, which really looked the part. Drew looked like he was concentrating very hard on delivering a top-notch performance. Sharp movement that I would love to emulate - in particular, his arms cut through the air like razor blades slicing through silk and his footwork hit the beats of the music in a rhythmically rich fashion. I liked the way that he interacted with Cheryl to create a very passionate and fiery atmosphere on the dancefloor. They've got great chemistry and I can't wait to see what they're like at the Quickstep next week.

Not much more to be said other than, to paraphase Bruno, Drew kicked some proverbial posterior.

Master P: Here to Represent or Just taking the P?

Barely one week in and this guy has already divided opinion. On the one hand, I actually enjoyed the routine, although that was probably down to "I Want You Back" as a funky music choice and the tireless industry of Ashly Delgrosso, who I think I am starting to develop a crush on.

Is P just doing it for his people or is there more at stake? From a sympathetic angle, he didn't have much time to train, having stepped in for his son Romeo at the last minute, and he seems to be doing it for a good cause. I thought he had good rhythm and exerted a swaggering and imposing presence on the dance floor. Perhaps, coming from a background where reputation and being the epitome of cool is paramount, P was a reluctant participant because he was thinking of how he would be portrayed in a world that is indeed far removed from the gangster image of hip hop.

There is another school of thought that says he demonstrated a lack of respect for this performing art and a lack of courtesy towards his partner Ashly Delgrosso. The partnership on the dancefloor relies upon the contribution of two people, two halves which fuse together in a union of elegance and grace in Ballroom or passion and flair in Latin. In Master P and Ashly's Cha Cha, there appeared to be one person who clearly gave a lot more than the other.

A lot of celebrities in the past Strictly Come Dancing and Dancing with the Stars series have said that they are dancing for their professional partners. Others have recognised how much time and effort that the professionals put into this endeavour. Whether you are a fan of his or not, Bill Turnbull was right in recognising that this is the dancers' livelihood, their passion and their calling. When someone fails to respect the most basic of traditions, etiquette and conventions on the dancefloor, let alone showing up for training sessions - Should this have been the case - then it is not surprising that this is bound to be an emotive issue. It was interesting to see Len Goodman mention that he should "commend your partner". If Master P fails to make the most of this rare priviledge of learning from a gifted and talented dance professional, then it is the most regrettable of circumstances, but it is ultimately his loss.

I don't know how Ashly will be able to motivate a partner whose heart is not in the dance and who appears not to want to take part to the fullest extent of his ability. That is the most difficult student of all. Kenny Mayne was not the best dancer, but no-one could deny his effort and fullest partipation. Still, it is only early days. Master P could be either turn himself into a serious proponent of Gangster Ballroom and take to it just as Darren Gough did in Strictly. Or he could provide the detonator for the self-destruction of his partnership with Ashly.

Hero of the week: Kenny Mayne

I am thankful to Kenny for demonstrating that not all the American celebrities are flawless specimens on the dance floor and that there are some who instead of cutting a rug, manage to get tangled up in it instead. At the risk of incurring the wrath of his fans, his routine was more hot scuff than hot stuff.

However, I do recognise though that it was a shame that Kenny was eliminated. He has immortalised himself by joining the ranks of Quentin Wilson in terms of being the plucky contestant who was a rhythmically challenged participant. It could provide entertainment gold though if he decided to face Quentin in an international dance off. The winner should face Diego Maradona.

This sports commentator provided the audience with a sporting effort. He slipped during his routine, some of his movements resembled what Craig might have called a drunken hoedown and his was the most frenzied flapping seen this side of a airplane traffic controller. I liked his wave as well, the kind you do when you see a familiar acquaintance in passing, but unfortunately are on your way to a previous engagement.

Still, kudos to Kenny for a brilliant effort and it was taken in such good humour as well. His self-deprecating explanation of the dancefloor story that he and Andrea were offering was hilarious. Even Bruno, who was decidedly psychotic that evening with his axe-wielding gesture, could not fail to be amused by Kenny's amusing turn of phrase. I miss him already.

Sidestep Notes

Some beautiful Waltzes. Liked Tatum although she appeared very hyper post dance. Nick Kosovich is a class act - the guy does not walk around like other human beings, there is something ethereal about his movement. I wonder why Lena Kosovich didn't take part? Maybe she wanted to support her man Nick instead or wasn't offered a role? Stacy and Tony's routine was classy and elegant, but I too would have liked to have seen them glide around the floor in Ballroom hold. Jerry Rice is going to be great - loved his American Football warm up on the spot choreography in the Cha Cha. It amazes me that Tia Carrere is on the dancefloor three months after having a baby, she did well despite the low marks. Lisa Rinna and Giselle Fernandez simply embody the height of the glamourous allied with hard work. And I would not mind sharing a dry martini with George Hamilton, after watching him attempt to bring Ballroom sophistication into the Latin Cha Cha.

All in all, looking forward to the second week and thanks for reading.

I'm pretty much with you on this Estilo...
It would have been fun to see Kenny dance again - he had such a good go and I may well be missing him already... as they say *overthere*.

The lady wrestler's waltz (and where was the waltz bit?) I didn't like. The 49ers wide receiver is one to watch. They missed out not getting a quarterback as a bit of competition for Jerry - like the Darren and James angle in SCD 3.

Good show and great of Raphael to put the professionals dances on too.

Watched a couple of ChaChaCha's yesterday.

Drew's was by far the best.

Yes he was. I read on his biography part that he had been in 'Rent' on Broadway. I couldn't see any dance credits to his name and although 'Rent' isn't a dance show particularly I think Drew's precision and the right amount of attack/performance has probably come from that theatre background. You have to be very precise in your movement and style in a theatre show. I look forward to seeing how he handles the Ballroom next week.

Edit: my American guy is thrilled to not have to record the show for me because of Raphael's website I did warn him that he may want to record it in case Raphael doesn't put it all on the web but he decided that he wouldn't need to do that. (He did actually say that he had thought about recording week 1 for me but the TV was fuzzy and he didn't want to move his arials as 'The Office' was on the good channel later that night!!!! I gave him a chance to rephrase his words but he didn't! )

About the Master P issue...

He KNEW that he was in as of December 15th. While not as much time as the others, 3 weeks would have been enough time to learn some easy steps as part of a very baisc routine. And yet, he himself has stated that he only showed up ONCE in that time frame.

Ashly has stated that she's exhausted and can't do it alone, although if you look at the cha-cha video that's exactly what she was having to do. And did she ever do a good job...there was pretty much plumes of smoke coming up from her shoes.

Then, to top it off (and you should have seen Len's tirade... ) he says in the Confessional 1.) That he won't even TRY to learn, and 2.) that he won't change for anyone, not even in this environment. This...and poor Ashly has been in tears twice, whether it's out of exhaustion or sheer frustration. Most real MEN I know would be HORRIFIED if a woman were to cry in their presence because of something they said. Did P even care about that?!? Not a damn bit. It's all about him, and only him. On the results show, she was overjoyed at learning they were to advance. He on the other hand, was actually MAD. Which proves to me that he does NOT want to be there, and seems pretty intent on making Ms. Delgrosso's life a living Hell because of it. Which is a shame really...because when she's her normal, effervescent and lively self...it's quite a pleasure to watch her dance. You can't help but want to try and keep up... And it's sad - because it's obvious. She's tired and drained...not as much joy or happiness in her as before - and it's getting lower by the day.

We's probably feel the same way too if the life was being sucked out of us like that.
