it's not certain, Radio 1 haven't announced it yet, they said anything can happen so expect that chart to change later.

http://www.virgin.net/music/charts/singles/1.html It's definitely official...although even more disappointing than predictable.

Album chart here:

It was announced officially on TOTP this afternoon, and considering that on Wednesday Shayne's single had sold 313k to Nizlopi's 80k, there was really never any doubt who was going to have the Christmas number one.

Not that I'm particularly bothered about the result, but the cynic in me finds it a little suspect that this nobody's single was sold at half price.

Shane's single is shite, but Nizlopi is even worse. The true number 1 is The Pogues- the song free from a crappy talent show that people buy because of the hype (and this time next year it will be "Shane who?"), or a rubbish song that got popular through massive overpromotion.

Appparently Shayne's single sold 742,000+ copies. Truly scary. Album sales must have been massive this week as well as I've just read from another forum (cool clarity) that Blunt sold 273,000+ this week...and still didn't get top spot!!

So The Pogues still don't get the Christmas No 1 they truly deserve- but I bet Shane Magowan had a drink to celebrate anyway.

At least 18 years ago they were beaten by the greatest British pop group of the last 20 years rather than some talentless show nobody singing a sub Westlife cast off.

To be fair, this song was hardly promoted. It's been available for months without anyone knowing it existed

Very unfortunate that The Pogues didn't get #1 this year. If a song deserves to be Christmas number one, its Fairytale of New York. As most people agree! Makes me think the chart is a fix..! But alas, plenty of kids and people who believe the hype of trash factor will buy that shitty single by whathisface.

You have to wonder at the mentality of people that buy this guff - do they have any musical judgement at all?

A song of a predictable genre (slow ballad), the proceeds of which, in this time of goodwill to all men, will just go to the one man and the already-rich-enough record company. Christmas charity in the pop music world is officially dead.

The 273,000 copies of Blunt's album were probably presents. How many will be listened to more than once?

You may be shocked, "Back To Bedlam" was the biggest selling album of this year.

The X Factor Winners single was actually the most expensive CD single in the charts at £3.99 compared to most others at either £1.99 or the few at £2.99.

Funny. Every shop I saw, including the one featured on bbc news had it cheaper. Maybe my eyes were full of christmas magic.

I am not bitter. I know James Blunt has done well but I am not convinced that everyone who has the album really likes him. The same probably goes for Will's album too. I am not that naive.

However, I really do feel that the hype has gone on long enough - I am bored, bored, bored with him. Did you hear Neil Sean talking about him yesterday on Sky News? NS cannot stand him!

You may be shocked, "Back To Bedlam" was the biggest selling album of this year.
Yes I know that - how could I miss it with you banging on about it? However I often wonder how many times the album is played by the people who have it. Even Will's!

I think James Blunt is like Marmite - you either love it or you hate it - I hate it!

orry this is completely off topic!

Neil Sean is the worst columnist there is at the moment. I read an article from him the other day where he really criticised Will Young for being a bit of a diva and having a flop album and his next single being brought forward because of this. So it isnt just James Blunt that he doesnt like. Who cares about him anyway? Neil Sean is regarded as a joke by many in the industry for frequently making up showbiz stories.

Got to agree with what people are saying about Shane getting to number one...its unfair it was released in time for Xmas no1, but then it was done because this is the best chance for him to get it! hes got a decent enoug voice, but surely the whole point of a xmas number 1 is that it actually involves xmas! the Pogues should have been number 1 and as far as im concerned, they were...the other 2 before them should be discounted!!!
