Mum used to be a huge fan of Paul Robeson (although she doesn't have any music of his), I have just read his biography by Martin Duberman and it is one of best biographies I have ever read.

It is got me wanting to get a CD of his music after reading about his interesting life. (although I know my mum will probably end up pinching it off me )

Just wondering if anyone here as ever listened to his music.

I've heard of Paul Robeson. He had a pretty hard life by all accounts because of social and racial discrimination. But he did have an amazing voice. Two songs that I've heard from him are Lazy Bones and Old Man River, both slave songs I think.

His father was a slave and Robeson was an equal rights activist who was named by the Un-American Activities commission.

Just quickly browsing a few web pages about him makes me want to learn more about his activism as well as his music.

-"To be free,to walk the good American earth as equal citizens, to live without fear, to enjoy the fruits of our toil to give our children every opportunity in life - that dream which we have held so long in our hearts is today the destiny that we hold in our hands."-

I don't know when he made that quote but watching the New Orleans tragedy pan out,it makes you wonder if that quote will ever be entirely in the past or if the minorities and less than wealthy will always be striving for something out of their reach.
