This is the best place to try (although you probably won't get too far if you do a search on Season 1 or anything to do with the number 28! )

Searching for 28 won't help - series 28 is Tennant's first, Eccleston was in series 27.

That'll be why it says "Series One" on the box, then!

Yes if you want to be pedantic series one is what the BBC are calling it (it would be hell to market a series 27 to people who haven't seen the first 26). But in terms of Doctor Who as a whole it's the 27th series. Not that I disagree with calling it the first series - for convenience I tend to refer to it as series one unless I'm in a conversation where I feel like being a total geek.

I would have said it was the pedantic ones who were calling it series 27!

Why?
Its not a spin-off, its clearly a continuation of the old series (re-inforced by older series characters returning in Series 28 ) so I wouldn't say calling it Series 27 was pedantic at all.

The BBC want to call it Series 1 and Series 2, that's fine and it does make it easier to market, but to me and many other older fans, it's Series 27 and 28

Because the BBC themselves refer to it as series one - and anything prior to this as 'classic' Who. That's good enough for me.

Me too! It's really not worth losing sleep over, though.

Of course its not And it's just down to preference I guess. You are looking forward to Series 2 and I'm looking forward to Series 28

Oh God I wish I'd never gotten myself drawn into this.

I started off correcting the series 27/28 mistake, a simple inaccuracy that benefits from being completely inambiguous.
Yes you are probably correct that people who insist it be called series 27 are pedantic but no more so than the people who insist on series 1. As I said before I favour neither designation and will happily use either at different times dependant upon the conversation I happen to be in. Ultimately the true pedants are the ones who care enough about either number to spend all their time complaining to and about about those who use it - and there seem to be plenty of those folks on either side.

Who was complaining? I was merely pointing out that outwith fandom, nobody refers to the 9th Doctor's tenure as "Series / season 27" and that if anybody asked about that in a video shop (which was the reason for the original question), they would get blank looks even if the shop assistant was standing in front of a twelve-foot high pile of Series One Boxed Sets, flanked by gold Daleks whilst wearing Slitheen underpants and asking every customer "Are you my mummy?". That's all.

True enough - I hereby declare this debate over as I have decided to devote my time to finding the shop you described.

Good - and if you find a pair of Slitheen underpants, let me know!

Some fans are still debating the titles of early William Hartnell stories I suspect the Series 1/27 debate will last another 26 years

See here for a price comparison (very useful site):

CD-WOW is currently the cheapest online.

P.S. It seems expensive for only 13 episodes. US series often give you 22-24 episodes for a similar price.

That criticism can be leveled at most UK releases, and even some UK releases of US shows (CSI in two boxset parts, same for Lost?)

I think they're pretty hard to get hold of now! I've heard that Blue Peter will be doing an episode next year with a section on how to make your own Slitheen underpants from a regular pair. Good news is that the BBC have learnt from the overwhelming demand and the Sycorax boxers coming in time for the DVD release of The Christmas Invasion will be better stocked.
