EPISODE THREE (Tuesday 27th Dec o5) (Opens with Terry sat up staring into space. He looks rough, not shaven and dirty, as though he hasn’t slept in a few days. He looks down at a picture of him and Jackie on their wedding day. They look very happy. Jackie has a beautiful smile on her face. Tears are visible from Terry’s eyes now. He snaps, and throws the picture up against the wall. A crack straight through Jackie’s face.) (Cuts to Claire in the laundrette. She Is very busy as she has been closed over the Christmas period and there is a back load of laundry to do. Bev enters with a bag of washing.) Bev - hiya Claire, any chance you can squeeze me in for a service wash? Claire - It wont be done until tonight, im rushed off my feet! Bev - That’s fine, What you get upto at Christmas? Claire - Not much really, quiet family meal, we couldn’t afford to go large this year. Jackie was supposed to come round for a drink last night but never showed so I haven’t really seen anybody. Bev - Jackie as in the Jackie who lives next door to me?? Claire - yes, why? Bev - Have you not heard Claire? Claire - Heard? Heard what? Bev - Im so sorry Claire, she’s dead. Claire - What?! (pause) dead? I only spoke to her the other night on the phone, she didn’t sound ill. Bev - She didn’t die of an illness. She was shot. Claire - Oh my gosh. (She sits down on the bench, very distraught.) Bev - the police are crawling everywhere out there, im surprised you didn’t know. (Cuts to police outside Jackie’s house. There’s a cordon around with a uniformed officer guarding the house. Detectives can be seen in the distance knocking on doors, enquiring about the happenings on Christmas day.) (Cuts to a shot of the inside of the Dean family’s front door.) (The door bell rings. And Sharon goes to answer.) Sharon - Yes? DI Brown - morning, sorry to disturb your boxing day celebrations, im DI Brown (shows badge) and this is DI Walker (points to young gentleman behind her who also displays his badge.) There was an incident in Dukinfield this Christmas, in this very avenue infact, involving Jackie Fern. Sharon - I heard, poor woman, brave though, fighting off a burlgar like that! DI Brown - yes she was, but look where it got her eh! Anyway, what im here for is quite a normality. Im just trying to paint a picture of where people were on the night. We discovered that many people in this part of Dukinfield went to the local bar, Bev’s bar. Where were you and your family on the night of 25th December 2005 at 9:15pm? Sharon - I was here, my whole family were. DI Brown - nobody left at any time? Sharon - Are you implying that one of us is to blame for this? That one of us killed Jackie?! DI Brown - no, we are asking all people in Dukinfield the same question. Sharon - Well nobody left this house, we were hear all night! DI Brown - Ok thank you. Did you hear anything around this time? See anybody around the back gardens? Sharon - No, we had a family dispute that night, and to be honest it hasn’t been a good few days, and its not the best of times now. DI Brown - ok no problem, ill call again another time. (Cuts back to Terry, Bev has come in the house.) Bev - Terry? (Terry doesn’t speak or move, Bev comes in and looks at him.) Bev - Terry? (she sees the broken picture.) Bev - Oh dear look what has happened here… (she picks up the pieces) I think ive got one of these frames round at mine ill replace that for you. (pause as she looks round at the room.) That burglar made a right mess didn’t he. (She looks up at blood stains on the wall and realises what she just said might upset Terry.) (terry looks up, his eyes watering.) Terry - (whispering corruptly) Get out, I want to be alone Bev - Terry, I’ve come to help Terry - (shouting) I DON’T WANT YOUR HELP! NODODY HELP ME! NOBODY HELPED HER. Bev - It couldn’t have been avoided Terry. Terry - (now crying) yes it could, I could’ve stayed with her, I could’ve stayed with her rather than go to the bar, I wasn’t here to protect her! IM USELESS. Bev - Your not to blame for this, listen to me, you didn’t know this would happen. Terry - Ill never forgive myself for this! (Cuts to Claire getting upset at home.) (Andrew Enters.) (Claire looks up) Claire - Jackie has been murdered. (cuts back to Bev and Terry) Terry - Im sorry for snapping. Bev - Its ok, your upset. Im here for you now though, come on you cant stay here. Come and stay in my spare room. (cuts to a shot of a tv screen, the news is about to start.) “Good evening, and welcome to Bradford early evening news, Tonight’s top story: Dukinfield sees its second murder in two months this Christmas as successful hotelier Jackie Fern was shot to death in the comfort of her own lounge. Police say they have found fibres of them matching those found at the scene of Susan Grants murder just 2 months ago, and are treating these murders as connected. Dukinfield braces themselves to accept news that there’s a serial killer living amongst them.” Camera pans round to Sammy. The sister of Susan who was sent to Bradford with a new name for her own safety, she drops her cup of tea in horror of what she can see on television. |
