Nooooooooo....

Had problems with the geometry on my Philips TV - 24PW6518. Went into the SAM menu. Adjusting it when the phone rang. My 3 year old grabbed the remote and started pressing buttons.

Total disaster.

Anyone know the Vertical and Horizontal default values for this set? Anyone got access to a service manual (not the user guides. I have those.). Anyone with the same set who's able to enter the SAM menu (I can help with the access code) and give me the readings I need?

My set's just out of guarantee. Tried searching for Philip's technical manuals online but I can't find anything for the 6518. It uses the LO4-3 chassis. Nearest I got were the values for the 28PW6006 - different chassis so the picture still looks totally skewed. Trying to readjust all the different vertical and horizontal values, in turn, is getting me nowhere.

Can anyone help?

We have a 28PW6816 if thats any help, unfortunatly i dont have the codes to get into the menu as i have mislaid them so i'll have to have another look on the net. I will post the details sometime later today in the afternoon/evening, i hope the two sets will have similar settings.

Unless of course someone else comes on before then and helps you out

Thanks for the response.

I'll give it a go but something tells me it's not going to work.

All Philips sets have unique horizontal and vertical values. So I think I need to get someone who has the exact same model. Or someone in the trade who can point me in the direction of the Philips' online technical manuals. If the tecnical/service manuals are online they keep them very well hidden from search engines.

Bit of a pain paying through the nose for a set of 10 different numerical values which would take seconds to tap in via the remote.

I've managed to get the picture back to something resembling normal but there are still no straight lines and menus look particularly skewed.

Well i tried a code just a minute ago but it only brought up the SDM menu an thats not much help, i have had SAM up before and i did worry about messing it up until i realised i could just hit standby and the settings returned to normal (obviously before they were saved)

Could you post the code that you used to get into the menu as i cant seem to find it on-line at the moment and the piece of paper went missing earlier in the year

thanks

do you have a dvd player that can play jpeg's? (photos)

if you do save this http://www.pctestpro.com/images/moni...creenshot5.gif to your computer as a jpeg and write it to a cd, play it in the dvd player and it will help you set up your screen. you'll just have to go through all the options until you get the lines looking straight again

Nice idea. Didn't work.

The image is too small. There's no way to enlarge it on my DVD player. At 4:3 it's tiny and it's only slightly bigger in 16:9.

i just searched 'test screen' to find one, im sure there is one thats bigger

do you have a sky? if you do once your in the service menu you could put the sky tv guide up and use that to get the sides straight (or a menu from your dvd or freeview or something else that has a screen where the sides are meant to be straight)

Tried that too.

Used the BBCi pages and the menu boxes from my Freeview STB.

I can get the top straight and the bottom bows outwards...or the bottom straight and the top bows inwards.

I get one side straight and the other side either bows out or in. I can get the menu boxes to look straight but then the 4:3 screen looks trapezoid and the picture is wierd. I can get the picture to look OK and the menu boxes are all over the place with not a straight line anywhere.

Still hunting for a Philips service manual URL but if it exists I cannot find it. Can find stuff for Sony, Panny and a host of others but not for Philips. Sh*theads!

You can gather I'm not in the best of moods! A nightmare. A total and complete nightmare.

I can imagine, i get worked up if things go wrong, many times with computers

I have found the same when it comes to philips tv's, absolutly nothing. I wanted to make the tv multi-regional so i could play DVD's from outside region 2 but no luck yet

Grasping at straws, I know but I had a problem with my Philips DVD player and I was given the email address of the technical dept.

They replied very quickly and seemed quite clued up. I cant find the address as it was quite a while back but try the Philips site for technical advice - they may have quick access to the settings you need.

Good luck,
Scorp

Very first thing I tried. Got told to contact an authorised service engineer!

The set's about a week out of guarantee. How annoying is that?

Yaaaaay!

Cracked it.

Trawled for Test Cards. Been at this PC all ******* day.

None of 'em worked. Then I stumbled on some ancient b&w thing from the 1930s made by RCA. Worked like a charm. The only jpeg image that filled the entire TV screen so I could see exactly what I was doing.

We have straight lines back on our TV!!!

Thanks for the help. Would never have thought of using a test card. Typical. It takes 1930s technology to fix a one year old telly.

well done , having a test card is the best way to get good picture geometry, even if it is over 70 years old!!!!

Yes very well done, glad you got it sorted.

Could you post a link to the site with the test card, i would like to make a VCD with a testcard or two just for novelty purposes,

I wasnt around when test cards were used and the closest i have come is a picture in front of a camcorder

thanks

Are you serious? Must have visited dozens of these sites. Burning CDs as I went. Trying to find test cards that are big enough to fill the screen is a bit of a pain.

The RCA Indian Head thing is American, though I'm pretty sure I got it from here:

http://www.meldrum.co.uk/mhp/testcard/bbc_test.html

You just need to poke about a bit.

My joy was short-lived. Things are still not 100% as far as menus and dialogue boxes are concerned on the TV but it's a lot better than it was when I tried doing it by pure guesswork.
