Restricted ???
A Pot Of Paint
28-12-2005
I am in my fourth year of a Vodafone contract, and have been more than happy with them. When I upgrade each year, I put PAYG (Vodafone) sim in the old phone, and keep that in the car for emergencies. There has never been any problem in doing this, and the 'phones have always worked perfectly. Contract renewal is due in February.

On Boxing Day, I checked the "emergency" phone to see if it needed charging, and the display was showing "phone restricted" and was asking for a code. The sim is fine, as I put it in the 'phone from the year before, and it is working fine - so what does this mean?

The 'phone is legitimately mine, has never belonged to anyone else, has never been reported lost or stolen, has only ever been used by me, and is kept in my car, inaccessible to anyone else.

So what could have gone wrong?

Are you sure that nobody else has had access to it? It sounds like someone fiddled around with the security options and got the password wrong 3 times.

Absolutely positive. Nobody else has touched it.

Could it just be the 'phone has died maybe?

It's not really a big deal in as much as I have the previous 'phone to use - it is just really bugging me as to what is likely to have gone wrong with the thing.

How long has it been since you did anything chargable with that PAYG SIM? They might have deemed it inactive and quaranteened the number. Give customer services a call and see what they say.

It had been just over a week - I make a call every two weeks or so, just to keep it active.

I think I am going to have to give them a call, I had hoped it might be something simple that I was missing, and didn't want to make an idiot of myself by ringing them, you see.

Simple solution to identify what is restricted.

Just pop your contract SIM in the "emergency" phone and the PAYG SIM in your current contract phone.

If your "emergency" phone with ethe current contract SIM installed still says restricted, then the handset is restricted (possibly a PIN required)

If your contract phone with the PAYG SIM installed now says restricted, then the SIM has a problem (either it is locked by a PIN or more probably has been deactivated by Vodafone)

The sim is fine, that is in the previous year's 'phone, and working perfectly, it is definitely the 'phone that is restricted somehow - although how is anyone's guess.

There is only 2 ways it could be restricted. (at least that I can think of)

1. It is blacklisted because it has been reported lost or stolen
As you obtained this new on contract, that is unlikely.

2. Someone has locked it with a PIN. If they have, it could now be further locked if you input the PIN incorrectly a number of times.

Time to dig out the instruction manual and find out what lock can be put on the phone and what security codes are required to overcome it.
