Faulty TV - Repair or Replace?
My Goodmans 33 inch CRT 4:3 TV set has just failed today. The set is about 9-10 years old and considering the heavy use it’s had it has lasted well. Right up until it failing the picture quality was perfect and there were no signs of failure such as flickering/unstable picture or loss in brightness. What happened was the set just shut down as if it had been turned off with the picture going down to small white dot as it normally does if you turn it off. However it would not switch back on and no lights lit on the display i.e. the standby light.
I can only guess there is something wrong in the set but was wondering if there may be an easy way of at least predicting what. Since the set cut out so suddenly I might guess it was an internal fuse blowing or a lose connection? Any other possibilities? Thankfully this is not my main set, earlier this year I was lucky enough to get a great deal on a new 32 inch widescreen set and knowing the age of the existing set and the use its had I realised it may not have had much more in it. However if its practical and worthwhile I would like to restore it to operation as it’s a nice set and even a little unique as such large 4:3 sets are not common anymore. Would repair be a practical option or at its current age would it be likely to just gain some months until something else goes on it? If repair is not practical the set would simply be taking up (a lot of) space and therefore would have to be disposed of which could be costly in itself. As the set would just be for occasional use a very basic 28 inch widescreen model would suffice which I estimate would be somewhere between £100 and £200 so repair of the existing set would have to be significantly cheaper than this to be at all worthwhile. Any advice or suggestions much appreciated Thanks in advance

9-10 years is great life from a TV set. Most modern day sets don't last that long. Its never a good idea to repair any TV/Video/DVD equipment these days costs far more in most cases then a new unit. Plus the repaired sets are just then using 'Borrowed Time' and will fail again resulting in another costly repair or a new set you should have got first time.
As luck would have it your at a time when TV sets are coming down in price as you say a 28" inch widescreen or bigger can be found for less then £200. This has a lot to do with the oncoming of LCD and Plasma sets, Digital sets plus the new HD-ready sets. Get a new set it'll stand you more in the long run then a bandaged one. |

Thanks for the replies
![]() Seems that replace is definately looking like the best option which to be honest does'nt surprise me that much, though of course still interested to hear if anyone has alternate views? That Sony set seems excellent and it certainly meets all my needs and for a Sony TV that is a great price. The only issue with that is if I can justify £250 for a second TV as like i said in my original post my main TV is a 32 inch Goodmans widescreen which I got earlier this year so the new TV would just be for occasional use e.g. if the main TV is already in use and i want to watch something else. |

Also to further identify the set there are some pictures of an identical one here where one is up for auction. Anyway please just let me know if you require any further information. |
