I've found a nice reciever with PLII that I want - now I need to decide on speakers to go with it. I want to keep the cost of the speakers and sub-woofer around £150. I was looking through various websites and found the Sony SAVE225 and SAVE325 speakers seem to fit the bill of what I'm looking for. My question is - what's the difference?
You can get the 225 for £150 from HiFiBitz or the 325 for £140 (inc £10 p&p) from Empire Direct. Both appear to have very similar specifications and only different in design.
Which of these is better? Does anyone have either?

HI,

I recently bought the Sony SAV525 kit (was £199.95 from www.superfi.co.uk now discontinued) and the speakers are really rather good. The subwoofer is meaty and powerful and the satellites are good for the size.

The speakers you are looking at are both good The sub on the SAV325 looks very similar to mine and should be almost identical in sound. I can't vouch for the other sub but looking at the picture they are very similar systems. I guess the only thing to worry about is that the amplifier you are attaching them to is not too powerful for them.

Out of interest what receiver have you gone for? I have the Sony STRDE-475, this does DTS and Dolby2 and is only £150 in certain outlets.

I decided to order the 325 speakers as they seemed slightly better and I prefer the look of them.
I have gone for the JVC RX5022 reciver. I was thinking about getting the Sony 475 in the HTK-475 kit (STRDE-475 + SAVE-225) but I decided I needed on with ProLogic II. There is a new Sony similar to the RX5022 with PLII (STRDE-585) for about the same price - but most of my system is JVC so it will look better.

Yes, there is a considerable difference between PLII and the original. If you listen to a lot of two-channel sources then it's definitely worth making sure that a new amp has this functionality. I replaced my PLI amp 15 months ago and haven't looked back. The thing I notice most is the increased activity in the surround channels. PLI has a mono rear channel with limited bandwith which is sent to both surround speakers. PLII derives SurroundLeft and SurroundRight channels which are full bandwith.

Compared to DTS? Apples and orange, I'm afraid - DTS is a fully discrete 5.1 surround format (i.e. the source contains six channels) and PLII, whilst sounding good, can't compete... having to extract it's surround information from the two stereo channels.

Hope this helps,

m.

yep gotta pretty much agree with this, I bought my marantz 5200 instead of some of the crazy reduced price amps because I wanted PL2 and I am glad I did. Its definitely worth getting as it does add to regular stereo films and music. Again though as stated, its not a patch on DTS and wasn’t really meant to be, but as a way of delivering surround on all 2 channel stereo it seems to do the job quite well
