There's a few you could try that have been posted in other threads, but the one I use it's a chargable call. Even with the free ones you usually need to credit your account first before calling.

VoIP Cheap charge £0.0825 / min to landlines and £0.1350 to mobiles.

SIP Discount charge €0.1180 / min to landlines and €0.1940 to mobiles.

Note: one is in pounds the other in Euro.

From your landline you could use a Dial-Thru (note you will be charged as soon as you connect to the service) http://www.dialwise.co.uk/index2.php

0844 566 48 48 5p / min to landlines and mobiles. I believe (when I last looked) Bulldog charge the same BT rates for calls to this number, however I can't vouch that Bulldog haven't blocked access to this access number.

Again from a landline there is http://www.teletop.co.uk/rates.php#m , 1p / min (on top of cost ot 020 access number) but this you have to dial an 090x number to top up with £1.50 and then dial a geographic 020 (London) number to access their service, if you don't mind taking the risk with these top-up services and you get cheap or free calls to standard geographic (01 / 02) numbers then it might be worth the risk, but I'd test the access number first as non-BT providers are known to block access.

If I do find someone offering cheaper rates or for free I will let you know.

Sister service to VoIP Cheap, VoIP Buster etc: http://www.netappel.fr/fr/rates.html#M

Currently charge 1 cent(€) to Malta (landlines), however you must top up with €10, if you will be making plenty of calls then this shouldn't be a problem.

Do they have a PC too? If so you could both use Skype and talk for free 24hrs a day.

Or use a proper VoIP service like Sipgate, VoIP Cheap, etc and not only make cheap and FREE calls to landlines and get a FREE incoming number, but also call others for free also on the same network, makes Skype Hype look like the kids toy it is.

Skype hype charge you for Skype In, neither Sipgate, nor VoIP Stunt, VoIP Buster, VoIP Cheap nor SIP Discount charge for this incoming number, (Sipgate no credit on the account needed either).

VoIP Stunt, VoIP Buster, VoIP Cheap, SIP Discount and Net Appel offer FREE calls to landlines in several countries.

Setup Sipgate with a UK phone number and run it in Malta.
