Bizzarely, this only happened in the original series for Peter Davidson's first story. Until then it was always 'Doctor Who' in the closing credits.

How did you get them to change it then? The internet wasn't around. Must have had inside contacts...

Like both new versions of the theme. Still can't stand the one used in the McCoy era tho', urrgh, 80's.

I know. I remember the first time I noticed it and thought "Wow, that makes much more sense". I never thought of it back then, but when the series re-booted and I saw "Doctor Who CHRISTOPHER ECCLESTON" on the roller (showing my age there ) I thought "Nooooooooooooooo, why have they done that? ", and this was further compounded by the CT for POTW when it said "and introducing DAVID TENNANT as the tenth Doctor Who" I was ready to punch RTD's lights out! Well, sort of...

What, the BBC Wales version from the Christmas invasion? Lucky sod!

Any chance of an email?

Apologies to Mulett who mentioned this earlier

I always called that bit the 'anthem' part of the theme, but apparantly in the industry it's known as 'middle 8'.

When is the Doctor Who music (theme tune and season one intrumental music) being released? In the old days, they used to release an album every now and again with all of this on it.”

That music is just utter gorgeousness dipped in chocolate!

That's twice you've used bragging rights in one thread.

Well - as the saying goes, if you've got it.....

Let the rest of us get it, also!

Oh dear - it looks like I'm the only one not liking it!!?

I love the return of the middle 8 - or whatever people want to call it - I soooo missed the best part of the tune last series. But I don't think the tune suits a full orchestral score. What has happened to the haunting elements that Murray Gold retained last series? It was a true enhancement - unlike previous re-workings as mentioned here.

For me the tune needs to feel "other-worldly" - this new version feels too much like the TV Movie version - one I didn't care for at all either. In fact the only redeeming feature of that arrangement was the fact that it started with the middle 8! Or would that make it the beginning 8?!

Anyways I'm glad other people like it - but for this fan, I feel it's lost something in translation...

No, Jim - you're not the only one. I can't bring myself to utterly dislike it but it isn't my favourite arrangement, to be honest.

I'm glad the music has been restored to the full version, but like you I also think this reworking makes it sound very much like the version for the tv movie - also, like you, I'm not too keen on that version either.

Too bombastic, imo. When, as you say, it should be haunting and other-worldly. (Ooh - I only read the first two paragraphs of your post so I didn't notice you'd already described it as 'other-worldly.' )

Still, I'm glad that the full theme has been restored and hopefully, we'll get a different arrangement at some point.

Well I haved to admit, I'm not bowled over by it - it's OK but not wonderful. I'm not against the orchestral nature of it as I thought the TVM version was OK (although it was a bit odd to start with the middle 8).

I agree that the previous version was better but in many ways, I thought it was a bit on the bombastic side with a lot of the extra elements added by Murray.

As for the middle 8 itself, it's good to hear it again but I preferred the olden days when it made a guest appearance from time to time when they had a particularly long list of credits. It was always a pleasant surprise to hear it from time to time in those days!

Anyway, I suspect that this version was a "Christmas treat", as suggested above, and we'll be back to the normal one in March (or whenever...)

I have a feeling Murray Gold may be a Stargate SG-1 fan thoough............

Or possibly just a David Arnold fan. He did the theme for the original Stargate, and also did some Bond themes. I'm definitely getting a Bond/Stargate vibe from this version of the theme. Not really a bad thing, as such, but it is a little different, and will take some getting used to.

Glad to see (hear) the Middle-8 back in some form though!

Nobody forget - this is for the end credits only, not the opening credits. That still has the (what we can now call) original music.
I understand why people may dislike it, but I thought it was perfect for the end of TCI. It might be a bit too "hyped-up" for the 2006 series endings.

It was an interesting arrangement for TCI but would like to get back to what we had throughout series one. Bit too jingly jangly for me!

Not wishing to sound impatient but my DVD copy of this would sound soooooo much better with the proper theme rather than the BBC Three continuity announcer...

I don't know if any of you have come across this extended version of the Season 1 closing theme:

http://whomix.trilete.net/?wmid=subr...ws&remixid=130

This contains the "middle 8" sections of the theme which was omitted from the season 1 closing titles.

I tried that - the two bits are of different qualities, so there's a really noticeable join.
