As i've said before you can't.

Unless it has recently changed, it is not possilble... I've tried it.

It was possible when mobile services were new, but the service was soon stopped.

In the US, you can call with no SIM, and you can connect to any network to make calls.

T-Mobile worked fine here for me at midnight, making my drunken calls to wish people I haven't spoken to for months a "Shappy Yew Near" and texts went through fine (and were received as far as I can tell OK)

As for making emergency calls in the UK without a SIM card - it's not possible.

I sent 4 texts last night at around 12.10am, and they still haven't been received by the people I sent them too. I'm with 02. Is anyone else still waiting?

Living in a rural area where about 80-90% of mobile users are on O2 (thanks to online SIM cards!) there was obviously a bit of trouble however at around 1.00am around 90% of my texts were getting through though some were saying that it failed when it actually got through, confirmed by *0#. From about 2.15am no problems.

I expected congestion, but it could have been worse

When people say the network is down or whatever, it doesnt really mean the network has crashed, its simply that everyone in the Uk is sending/receiveing calls and texts through the network and it reaches full capacity. Once at full capacity it wont let any more texts or calls thru until theres enough space for your text or call.

However, the cells have a priority to 999 calls, so if you make one, it would drop a "personal call" in order to let yours through. No matter how congested the network gets, an emergency call will take priority.

Does that make it any clearer? or have i confused you more? hehe

Happy New Year!!”

This does not apply here for the first year as all networks have full signal but go back 2 years or so when the networks were down. Around a few mins past 12am the phones display would clear no network name and 0 bar of signal.

This is because the network is full, so if you have got no network name and 0 bars of signal its not locked onto the network as its full. How can your phone make an emergency call if you have no network name displayed on your phone and 0 bars of signal.

So if you have got no coverage because the cell is full, how on earth is is going to log-back on to your home networkt o make that emergency call? And this is the same if a cell breaks it just does not display the network name and 0 bars of signal coverage.

On Virgin and was fine calling people but trying to send a batch of texts and it just kept saying 'Failed'. After about 4 or 5 attempts at sending, I checked my credit and had be charged for them all so they had been sent and people have received multiples, but no delivery reports.

I always thought that 999/112 calls had priority, then business users, then normal postpaid, and then prepay. Prepay users get kicked off the network first if it's busy. I noticed my postpaid was working a lot better than my friends prepaid, both on the same network.

In Sheffield last night, West Street, my friends O2 and T-mobile completely lost signal, and Orange wouldn't connect a call or text. My Vodafone was working fine until about 12:15, and then the 3G reception went and wouldn't return. The 2G network seemed to be working ok though, an odd few texts wouldn't send the first time. Still getting Vodafone Call Catcher messages this morning though! Maybe the call catcher service got clogged with users not being able to connect.

I went to put £20 on and the woman behind the counter in my local Tesco Express told me that it wont accept the transaction... i was thinkin "OMG i dont need this..." but i assumed the network congestion the night before might have had something to do with it. So she tried it 2 more times and it still said failed. so she gave me a voucher (it looks like a receipt) so i left the shop. Dialled 4444 and it went and told me my balance which i expected to be £0.00. It wasn't, it was £20.00!! It had accepted but for some reason the systems in the shop told me it failed, so i thought "what should i do with the voucher then?". I put the voucher in and it took me up to £40.00!!

On the edge of Nottingham I was in a location where for most of the night my phone displayed "Select Network?", and when it did have coverage only 1 bar, and a network scan showed only Vodafone was present (Three, Orange and O2 users had the same problem).

From 22:30 xnet delivery reports were taking ages to get back (although as I got some replies back quickly i'm guessing that T-Mobile put the reports to the back of the queue - I got the last one at 21:00 yesterday). It took about 20 minutes to send 12 messages, the main problem being "Sending Failed. No Netw Coverage".

A message to my mum (Vodafone PAYT, ex One2One number) was recived minutes after being send, but my dad (Vodafone contract) took until 09:00 to be delivered.

Last year in Nottingham city center the messages were sent almost instantly - however the city center does seem to be saturated with T-Mobile masts according to sitefinder!
