Hello all.

I installed Skype last night.
Nearly every call I make gets cutoff. Is this a regular feature on Skype?
What can I do?
I'm on a network of 3 computers with broadband 1Mb.
If someone's downloading a lot, could it cut the call?

Thanks,

gaffer

You could try www.voipstunt.com and ditch skype.. it's awful!

PM me if you want info on other providers

Remember that Skype uses P2p to route other peoples calls as well as your own , thus eating into your available bandwidth & processing power. If you are sharing a 1Mb connection between 3 computers & they are doing bandwidth intensive tasks also, you may be saturating your available bandwidth.

Right.
So, I would need to increase my broadband subscription to get more bandwidth?

I was actually talking about "Skype Out" where you phone landlines...

Daft question I know but you do have enough credit in your skype out account to enable you to call landlines?I'm presuming yes (sorry, best to check the basics) & that skype cuts out whenever.

Yes there's loads of credit.

It's quite frustrating!

Certainly an ammount of bandwidth & processing power will be required when making a call( a shared connection or wireless or worse, both will have a reduced bandwidth). For instance I cannot be downloading, sharing files & make a voip call without my voice breaking up for the caller.
Are you able to test Skype with just you on the network, just to see if this is a bandwidth issue.

Do you make any connection at all for any period? (remember you'll have to put numbers in prefaced by +44 & remove the zero from area codes)

OK thanks.

I'll see if I can try when the others are off the network/not downloading...

If you plan to make loads of calls, then I wouldn't use Skype Hype Out, when you can use VoIP Cheap, SIP Discount or VoIP Stunt (also VoIP Buster**) as with these you can call UK landlines and several other country landlines for free.

You just need to credit the account with £5 or €5 depending on service.

With VoIP Cheap you also get an incoming number, something Skype Hype charge for. Though depending on the location you set will depend if it is a standard 01 or 02 number or a VoIP 0560 number, I know Birmingham, Liverpool and London are available.

With VoIP Stunt, it appears without credit, instead of being cut off after 1 minute, some people are able to make slightly longer calls.

**No free calls to UK linelines
