I think what happened is that the hitman was waiting for midnight anyway, and Johnny didn't contact him, but actually took a photo of Phil in the room, implicating him for the attack. I haven't heard this possibility yet, but it could happen. It would explain Phils next disappearance, he might try to blackmail Johnny with the footage, but he turns it back on him with the photo.

Yeh but he knew the scriptwriters would phone the ambulance while he sorted out the hit man.

All these theories sound pausible - i think Johnny probably ordered a hitman to kill Dennis anyway if he hadn't left by midnight. What i want to know who is the b*****d who killed Dennis! Guess we'll never find out. *Sighs*

How do you know Johnny wasnt just bluffing and Phil hired the hitman to kill Dennis to cover up the fact he motivated him and pushed him into *attempting* to murder johnny. Also maybe to frame johnny and his bluff ?

The hitman had a standing order to kill Dennis if he was still in the square at midnight, unless he got a call from Jonny to cancel, I believe thats the way these things are done. Dunno why Jonny picked up the phone though

Maybe just to call himself an ambulance.
