Which DVD Recorder
I am thinking of buying the Pioneer DVR-630H S,
http://www.pioneer.co.uk/uk/product_...nomy_id=45-133 it has strong features and have heard of no complaints. Or theres the LG RH7900H http://www.lgelectronics.co.uk/prodm...model=NOTHING#. Havent heard anything about this model, but it does have HDMI and can record and play at the same time. The pioneer does not say it can or cant do this. Also the pioneer doesent say you can pause live TV but i assume you can. Does anyone have any of these units and could share some info. Thanks Matt |

In fact, that's how the Pause Live TV works. It's not a Pause Live TV function as such but you can playback a recording while it's still being recorded (the facility is called Chase Play). To achieve real Pause Live TV, you would have to set it recording as soon as you sit down for an evening's viewing and then press Play straight away. That way, you are watching live TV while it's being recorded and you can pause and rewind it at will. |

Thanks for that explanation, are you pleased with the pioneer are there any faults it has. I have alot of pioneer stuff and it all works great. I was only considering the LG cause it has HDMI (upscaling).
But next on the shopping list is a HD Ready screen and more than likey a video scaler so the upscaling on the LG wont be any where as good as a DVDO scaler for example. Matt |

Yes, I'm very pleased with it. A few minor niggles but I'm probably being too picky! For example, you have to explicitly set the SCART sockets to a particular type of video, it won't just get what's being sent to it (input) and won't output all types of video at the same time. The SCARTS are not in/out - one is in only and one is out only. Would therefore have liked an additional SCART to aid connectivity. Guide Plus doesn't carry all channel listings. Can't copy NTSC recordings if the unit is set to PAL - have to change the input TV system in the setup first.
Not sure if I've got some sort of feedback loop in the way I've connected it with my Sky box and VCR but when the Sky box is in standby the picture is not just blank but rolls and displays funny colours. That's where a third SCART would have been useful so that the VCR didn't need to be daisy-chained with the Sky box. Sometimes when playing a VHS tape it will fail to synch and the picture rolls. But overall it's very impressive. Recording onto HDD/DVD and copying between them is quick and easy. Editing is very flexible. Help given on-screen is useful, for example where you're given a choice of things to do it explains what each choice is and the implications of it, rather than just presenting you with an unfriendly list of choices (e.g. edit in VR mode or video mode). Tells you when what you're doing will cause scheduled recordings to overlap or cause one to be missed etc. Plenty of inputs beside SCART (2 composite, 2 s-video, 1 camcorder DV in) to allow recording from whatever other source you want. No faults or bugs that I've come across. PS I think I was also looking at the LG range initially but they don't have RGB on the SCARTs? |
