New to VOIP - suggestions please!
Hi !
I'm thinking about dumping my BT line (and monthly rental) for a VOIP service. I'd still like to be able to call landline numbers and recieve calls as normal, but how do I go about it? I know I need to sign up to a VOIP provider. Is there one that can port my number from BT so I don't have to inform everyone that my number has changed? How reliable do people find it? Can you suggest a provider? Thanks in advance! Ben. |

At the moment you can't port a BT number to VoIP.
To dump the landline, you would need broadband from a cable provider. To test the water, I'd suggest www.sipgate.co.uk, you can set it all up for free, you even get an incoming number of your choice of area, not just local to yourself. This will allow you to receive calls and make calls to free-phone numbers at no cost, if you want to make calls via this service you need to add credit. At this point I would sign up for www.voipstunt.com, for a €5 setup you can make unlimited calls for free to UK and several other countries landlines. |

I have heard that the company Magrathea who supply numbers to Sipgate and many other VoIP providers, do try and port a number, but so far it is proving extremely difficult for them. But it may be worth a try and see how far you get.
