Can anyone recommend a good program to convert .BMP files to .JPG? I have thousands of photo's saved to my hard drive from my digi camera and they have all stored as .bmp files. These seem to take up far more space the jpg files so I was looking to convert them all.

Has anyone found a program that does this without losing too much picture quality? Are there any free programs that do this? Or are they not as good quailty?

Thanks in advance for any replies

You could try MIR; I use this all the time to convert and manipulate lots of images at once. It takes a short time to get used to it, but because it does the same action on all selected images it is quicker long term.

It requires the .Net framework (1.1).

sancheeez suggestion may be the best if you are wanting to do them by batch but GIMP is considered by many to be a real alternative to PhotoShop (the industry standard) and best of all it is free: http://www.gimp.org

I have only used a very old version of GIMP and it didnt "feel" very nice but looking at the new screen shots it has come on a long way - I have photoshop for my use so havent investigated the newer versions.

Thanks for the replies. I have just tried the one sancheeez suggested and it did exactly what I needed. I will try the others as well and see which one is best for me.

But again many thanks for the replies. It goes to show how good DS is if you need some advice

Remember that when you convert to JPG, you can select the level of compression used. More compression = poorer picture so you can pick the most appropriate compression level for your material.
