New to the forum here. Apologies if this query has already been answered, I had a look down the list, but couldnt see it.

My DMRES10, which i bought recently, records from the tele, and plays back just fine. However, when playing shop bought DVDs, the picture is very blurred, jumping, flashing etc, and completley unwatchable. These are region 2 DVDs, that i bought in the UK, that should be compatible. They also worked fine on my old DVD player.

Other than it being a faulty machine, the only thing I can think of is the scart lead. My new player didnt come with a scart cable (which I thought was a bit strange), so I used the cable from my old machine, a Cambridge Audio player.

Is this likely to be causing the problem with the shop bought DVDs? (Not sure if there is a difference in compatibility between scarts) Or is it more likely to be a faulty DVD player?

Just bought an ES10 myself, but haven't played any films in it yet.

Have you connected the ES10 to a video by scart, then scart from video to tv? If so, it sounds like the video's copyright protection is zapping the picture (in case you were trying to video a dvd). This shown on p9 of the manual.

I've got nothing extra attached to it, such as freeview, sky box, vcr etc etc.
Purely my tv, my dvd recorder, an aerial and a scart!

So I would hope that copy protection wouldnt be kicking in, its all above board!

I'm not a techie so was hoping my basic advice would work

After my last posting I popped a DVD movie in and it played ok, or at least the minute I watched was fine!

My next course of action would be to recheck the Scart connection, when I set mine up the tv channels were tuning on the display but I had a totally blank screen via Scart - just as I was about to panic I found the Scart wasn't fully pushed into the tv. Also double/triple check you are in the correct Scart connection(s) on both units - I don't mean to state the obvious, but its always worth a recheck. Then check the settings on the ES10, I don't know what incorrect pal/ntsc etc etc would cause, but again its worth a recheck.

After that maybe try moving the Scart cable to see if that effects the problem. The ES10 doesn't come with a Scart cable - I briefly owned an Alba 1002 (returned for refund) which came with every cable ever needed!

Actually, I managed to now solve this problem, so if anyone gets this same issue...

try plugging in the scart only half way! I was taking it out of my tv, and with the pins just touching the socket, the picture suddenly cleared!
So I have plugged in half way in, and it works just fine.

No idea why, but I'm not going to ask questions!

Really pleased to hear you solved that (not least because I own one myself!) Next suggestion would have been to hit it

I'm very pleased with the ES10 so far, having briefly owned the Alba I cannot believe the leap in quality and features for not that much more money.
