relocating tv
I am looking at buying a large lcd screen to put on the wall in our lounge. The current tv, sat, vcr and dvd are all in one corner of the room with the sat and tv cables and I want them to stay there (except old tv of course).
The new tv position is on an opposite wall and I want to run a cable from the current position, outside, along a wall and back inside via a cupboard into the back of the new tv. Can I connect the dvd, sat reciever and vcr to one cable which then runs to the tv? What sort of cable should this be? The run would be 7-8m. Would the equipment interfere with each other? Thanks |

The easiest (and also the worst) way to do this would be using an RF cable (assuming the LCD is a TV not just a display panel and everything has an RF modulator - DVD?). But using RF gives the worst picture quality and only mono sound so is not going to do your new system very much justice.
By far the best way would be to run a SCART lead round the inside walls. Not as visually attractive maybe but will give far better results. I don't know of any outdoor grade cables and in any case wiring up a SCART connector is not one of my favourite tasks . Something you would have to do if you wnated to run it through holes in the wall. Using an indoor grade cable outside is never a good idea as the plastics used are not suited to the cold and rain they would encounter.Something like the 10m version of this from Maplin would do the job... http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?...=35909&doy=4m1 Then you need to work out how to connect up all the various bits of kit. A possible scenario is... DVD --> VCR "AV2" SCART VCR AV1 SCART --> Sat box "VCR" SCART Sat box "TV" SCART --> TV If your VCR has two SCART sockets that is. If you are lucky this set-up might allow RGB passtrough all the way from DVD to TV but there is a real possibility it won't. If the DVD by some chance has two SCARTs (if it's a recorder not a player it may well have) then swap the positions of VCR and DVD round. Or even... VCR --> Sat "VCR" SCART Sat "TV" SCART --> DVD "AV2" SCART DVD "AV1" SCART --> TV (NB the SCART sockets may be labelled differently) Another possibility is to use an AV sender instead of the final lead between the Sat/DVD/VCR stack and the TV. |

One option would be to get a SCART switch to connect up where your sources are and then run a single cable to the TV.
Depending on your DVD player (and your new screen) this may not be the best picture quality though as both component and HDMI/DVI provide better picture quality (generally) - likewise if you are going down the high def route then HD is only to definately be available by HDMI/DVI and probably component so you would be limiting your options for the future. 7-8m isnt an ideal run for an analogue signal but there are plenty of people who have done it - I know a few people that have a lcd/ plasma screen near their sources for TV watching and a projector at the other end of the room for watching sport/ DVDs and so have had to have a long run of cable. If it is going outside then ideally you should get a cable that is "exteria" grade (many plastics are broken down over time by sunlight and rodents can take a fancy to eating them) - most the people I have mentioned have done their setups during a renovation of the room and so have put then behind skirting or cut channels in the walls to run them in rather than actually having them outside. |

Thanks for advice but it raises more questions!
I have tried a video sender but the washing machine interferes with it. My dvd is recordable but I only use my vcr for playing. Does this mean the connections should be different. Can I connect scart leads from sat, dvd and video into a scart box and run 1 cable to tv? What about the terrestial tv signal? will that play via dvd or sat reciever? I could probably run the cable internally. Can you get flat scart cables which could be buried into wall? |

You can certainly get flat cables though I dont know off hand if they come in the lengths that you need - have a look at the QED/ IXOS websites if you want "quality" brands or the likes of Maplins if you are happy enough with the cheaper makes.
If you are doing to be "damaging" your walls to do this it may be worth considering putting in some redundant cables (like HDMI/DVI) to prevent having to do this again in a year or two. |

with a DVDR you need this set up as posted above:
VCR --> Sat "VCR" SCART Sat "TV" SCART --> DVD "AV2" SCART DVD "AV1" SCART --> TV plus the RF connections if you need this as well External aerial ---> DVDR RF in (assume you wish to record terrestrial) DVDR RF out ---> TV so make your channel big enough for two! Rgds, Scorp |
