But the Slitheen are making an appearance in S2 by all accounts.

The world of Who is a complex one with so many time streams going on thanks to the original series, the BBC Radio dramas, Big Finish, and oh so many novels. For me personally, I'd be more than happy for Auntie to give BBC Films, in co-operation with the lovely people at BBC Wales, the red light to bring Doctor Who to the big screen, where they can explore the whole Time War, and ultimate death of Gallifrey and it's people. 2 hours of special effects, Paul McGann, CE, Daleks, Gelth, Cybermen...hell, everything.
The thing is, if such a film was successful, there is always the option to film other things, such as Shada.
I would dearly love to see this finally sorted out.
The BBC VHS was all well and good...except for Tom Baker's DB Suit in the links. The audio version was very good, but I would like to see it realised once and for all on film. Sorry, off topic. Apologies, go carried away eith all the Time War talk.

Perhaps he thinks that we will grow to like them.

Maybe they did watch AOL/WW3 (but not the Dalek episodes) and thought it was time they came back!

Although, I did like Margaret in Boomtown

Yeah, well, he can think again.
Stupid farting gimps. I get enough of that at home.

That's possible. They feature alot in books/products as if they are to be regarded as the main new alien.

The exploration of Margaret's character (the 'humanity' if you will) made Boomtown a much better episode for me than AOL/WW3.

I really enjoyed Boomtown.

They were good things in AOL/WW3. We got Harriet Jones from those episodes.

Couldn't agree more. And, of course, Annette Badland is such a great actress.

The whole feel of Boomtown was just right IMO. The Tardis crew seemed relaxed and enjoying a well deserved break with a reasonably minor foe to deal with while we all caught our breath before the frenetic end to the series.

All we need is a decent backstory for the Slitheen and I'm sure we could love them.

Boomtown was a much better story than the earlier two and Margaret was superbly played by Annette Badland. I just didn't find them fascinating as adversaries I guess but that is just my own personal opinion.

We should really start worrying when we see the Slitheen hot water bottles hitting the shelves!

I have no objections to RTD bringing them back if they are given a worthy and interesting story but feel series two is too soon. Would prefer to see some new adversaries as well as the Cybermen in the next one.

Boomtown wasn't pantomimey or farcical. There was depth, and we got to examine the consequences of the Doctor's actions. And surprisingly we felt sympathy for the vile Mags, and she was vile, she lived in a dead womans skin in case we'd forgotten, this sympathy was allowed because of the way the whole thing was pitched, and contained much of what was great about the last series. WW3 etc however was weak. There were great set pieces in it, and lovely SFX, and Andrew Marr, but felt a bit flat.
If The Slitheen are to make a come back, I'd prefer "Boomtown" to the WW3/Aliens of London version.

That'll be my fault for becoming Ben Elton mid post. Sorry.

Isn't she just (and as a further incentive for you to watch it, Annette is also in Casanova. )

I also agree about the pacing - we *needed* a relative calm before the storm.

I see you read my post just before it was closed then.

I wouldn't blame yourself. The thread did seem to have become a bit of a feeding ground for trolls.

Yeah - I didn't get that!

The bickering happened ages ago.

The thread went a bit into stage shows, mentioned Rob Lowe and Aaaron Sorkin and then you went all Ben Elton, was spotted by Den and then - shut!

True Boomtown did sort of calm things down before the epic Bad Wolf/Parting of the Ways but whilst there were a number of positive aspects to series one, equally it was flawed in a number of ways. Think in one of our many discussions Den, especially at the end of the last series, we both hoped that RTD and co would look at what worked and what didn't and use that to make it even stronger. I have just being saying something similar to Yoonix on another thread.

I could live less without the juvenile farting gags which were incredibly laboured and got quite tiresome and more of the high callibre of writing from the pens of Moffat, Shearman and Gatiss.

From a personal point of view, BG, I have always said that the darker episodes have always appealed to me much more than the more juvenile episodes.

But I think we have to consider the audience that DW is aimed at - something along the lines of 8 to 80+?

I'm sure that children of a single-figure age loved the fart-gags... and for me, as an adult, there was always the special effects and the addition to the overall story-arc to keep me happy. As I'm sure you recall, the Slitheen two-parter was my least favourite story in the whole series, but I can see why it was done and even if parents were bored with part one, I'm sure that their children would have ensured that they watched part two.

Personally, I think that RTD could add a slightly more complex tone to the more child-orientated episodes - and if done in the right way, would go totally over the top of the younger audience's head whilst engaging the adults even more.

It was a bit odd. Really strange cut off point.
I'd have shut it down much earlier. Maybe they don't like my impressions of 80's comedians. Shame really, I was about to do my "Stoneybridge" routine, in which I refer to Margaret Slitheen as Maigrit and pronounce Video wrong.

As much as I think the Slitheen severely lower the quality of any episode, I have to say that the episode "AOL" featured the best surreal idea of the whole series for me, and unfortunately, the effect of which, was completely destroyed by farting rubber-suited aliens.

That was the genetically enhanced pig fearing for his life and filling his spacepants trying to pilot a spaceship. Such a superbly original start... wasted. Oh well.
