You can sort of understand why they used a 'catch 'em all' kind of approach in the last series, because the priority was to ensure that the series survived past one series and a level of success was demanded of the show.
But in series 2 you would have thought that now that they have a core amount of fans, they can now concentrate on improvements and stronger stories......they really, really shouldn't be resorting to gimmicks in series 2.
As you say, there reaches a point where you keep trying the same kind of gimmick and it reaches a level of diminishing returns.
And I'm not happy about the show trying to promote The Slitheeen as a major enemy (if that's what they're doing according to another poster in this thread).
I'm just getting a feeling that the PR behind the show is trying to push stuff onto us, in a way which a cheaper, tackier kind of show might do.
Not just with what I just mentioned, but I just get a general sense of some kind of cynical control going on with the marketing of the show, where it gets to the point they will just bullshit us, or tell us what we like instead of letting us make our own minds up about something.
I don't remember enemies such as the Daleks, or the Cybermen originally forced down our throat when they first appeared, and us being told what we like. I thought that it was the viewers response which informed them what we liked.
In fact, I might be wrong here, didn't they have some serious doubts about the Daleks at first?
