From memory the nearest equivalent height to your 20" 4:3 would actually be 28" in a widescreen. However, don't forget that on your 20" the picture height is significantly reduced when displaying a widescreen letterbox picture, so you might feel comfortable enough with a 26".

A 20" TV's screen should be 12" high.
This equates to a 24.5" widescreen image (pythagoras; 12" tall x 21.5" wide => 24.5" diagonal). Given that you lose a bit with a CRT (I'm guessing you have a 20" CRT at the moment), a 23" LCD widescreen (which is true 23") should be more or less identical in height to a 20" CRT. For reference, widescreen vertical sizes (approx): 20" is 9.8" high 23" is 11.3" high 26" is 12.75" high 28" is 13.75" high |

Though because the ratio of the width -v- height is different a wide screen will "look" shorter even though it is an identical height.

Good point. What looks the same and what is the same are not necessarily the same.
On a semi-related point, I've lost the manual to my 36" Panasonic CRT widescreen. Can anyone confirm what the viewable size is on these screens? I think it's about 34"; I may replace it with a 32" LCD at some stage and would like to know how much screen I'd be losing... |
