I only recently "discovered" the Floyd, and I have to agree - wow!

Wow!
or

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way.
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way.

Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain.
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today.
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you.
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun.

So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again.
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older,
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.

Every year is getting shorter never seem to find the time.
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over,
Thought I'd something more to say.

Fantastic lyrics, still sends shivers down my spine, especially now as I'm over 50.

Was watching a re-run of a recent Jools Holland Later last night and he interviewed Waters, who seemed very upbeat about the prospects of a re-union. I think it will happen, personally. Mason could then buy loads more rare Ferraris . It would sort of dwarf the Take That re-union, don't you think? Maybe a bit of dry run during Gilmour's 2 nights at Albert Hall?

It's good to see they're finally getting the recognition they've deserved in this country!

I still remember queuing to buy The Wall the day it came out and sitting, with a friend at his house because his dad had a decent hi-fi, in absolute silence as we listened to it the first time!

Absolutely, but Daevid Allen made a very good point in the article about Syd Barrett in Saturday's Independent:

His naive, childlike songs were for people who wanted to reject the old ways - the generation which hadn't grown up with the war. It was a glorification of the innocence of childhood.

That's why I quoted from his lyrics, because there's more to the Floyd than the deep thought and musical heaviosity of their classic albums.

They've always had recognition in this country......

For me, they are great at times, but too often they over do the long winded instrumentals....like On The Run. I think they are good in small doses. They were never as good as the Beatles or Led Zeppelin, but always better than Queen.

...or Barrett had the lyric-writing skills of an 8 year old.

I find those songs embarrasing and unlistenable, I'm afraid, and I'm a huge Floyd fan. I find it hard to think of a single Barrett-written song that I actually like.

For me, Pink Floyd started in about 1970 with Atom Heart Mother. "Piper" and "Saucerful" might as well have never been written, or at least written and performed by a different band (with the exception of one or two songs, e.g. Interstellar Overdrive)

If you happen to like reggae as well as Pink Floyd, take a look at this.

Yes, its like a musical progression. the sixties floyd, young carefree and a certain innocence. They lose Syd, get older, and their music and lyrics become more circumspect and make us think about life, the meaning of life, whats it all about, etc etc. The floyd were classified as 'progressive' rock. thats exactly what they do, progress, change, get older and reflect how they feel and the changing nature of everyone as they get older.

Glad to see so many new fans of Floyd. They are pure class. An epic band.

I just wish there would be more of their live material released (not just Pulse, which was released on VHS about ten years ago..)

I've seen it in shops few times, but always thought there wasn't enough music on it to warrant buying it... might find myself heading down to HMV in a few hours now

Yea, great band at times, and they did produce some class work, but they were often a bit too self indulgent with their music, if you get my meaning. Led Zeppelin were a bit like that in their live shows, but on their studio albums were normal. Pink Floyd tended to do too many never-ending songs even on their albums!

One thing I remember which seems quite remarkable nowadays is that bands such as Pink Floyd used to do sessions for Radio 1 where they would play anything from a couple of tracks to their entire latest album live. Then the DJ, Peel or Alan Black or Pete Drummond or whoever, would slot the live tracks into the show along with the the music on vinyl. Or they would do Radio 1 In Concert and play an hour long set which would be broadcast uninterrupted at about seven in the evening.

Pink Floyd did a live version of The Atom Heart Mother for Radio 1; my recollection is that it was broadcast before the album was released and that it was better than the version on the LP! Sorry if my memory is playing up; it was a v. long time ago.

In the mainstream, I'd say that was debatable.

But that's the point of their music - they're not a 3-minute pop band. Long tracks allow the music to develope rathyer than be limited to the 7" format that pop music took.

And to compare The Beatles, Led zeppelin, Pink Floyd & Queen is as pointless as it is impossible.

Thanks. That's the concert I remember - the arrangement on Atom Heart Mother was different from the album and (obviously) made a big impression at the time.
