Help needed connecting DVD, freeview etc
I am going insane trying to connect my new DVD recorder and am in need of some advice!!!
I have a TV (2 scart), Freeview box (2 scart) DVD recorder ( 2 scart) and also a DVD player which I want to keep as has surround sound and speakers attached! At the moment I have: Aerial from wall to freeview to DVD rec to TV Scart from TV AV1 to DVD rec (AV1) and AV2 to DVD player (red white and yellow) VCR Scart from Freeview to DVD rec (AV2) Audio connection from freeview – DVD player red and white Audio opt dig cable from DVD rec to DVD player This is what was suggested to me by supplier of DVD rec and … .. I can’t watch analogue when the DVD rec is on – can’t record freeview – channel changes with my TV remote! The picture is now dull .. and when the DVD rec is on I get a analogue picture which is split into the 4 corners of the screen and scrolling!!! I am in need of some help – am considering paying someone to come and sort this out as am sick of it, but don’t really want to be beaten by flipping cables!!! I might add that I had a VCR connected before the DVD rec and all worked perfectly – and no can’t remember exactly how it was connected – but am sure I couldn’t just swap the plugs – as would have tried that! Heeeeeeeeeeeelp! |

OK, here goes - Aerial from wall to Freeview then to DVDR then TV should fine.
THEN SCARTS AS FOLLOWS: Freeview AV1 --> DVDR AV1 (Freeview set to RGB if possible and your TV allows, as it usually gives the best pictures) DVDR AV2 --> TV AV1 DVD player 3phono --> TV AV2 IF THAT DOESN'T WORK all you need do is switch the SCART leads at the back of the DVDR around so it becomes: Freeview AV1 --> DVDR AV2 DVDR AV1 --> TV DVD player left as above. Bear in mind that this will negate the use of RGB, although this isn't the absoloute end of the world as your pictures should still be quite good in composite. |

If you DVD player has an SVideo output you could connect to TV AV2 using an Svideo to scart connector (only converting the connector not the signal) so you would have Svideo going into TV AV2. This may give you a better signal than composite with the phono leads. To add your VCR connect VCR AV2 to Freeview VCR scart and daisy chain the signal through the FV box and the DVDR to the TV. This will allow you to record FV to VCR or DVDR record VCR to DVDR record DVDR to VCR although I'm not sure you would want to do some of these! You may also want to add your VCR into the RF loop to give you analog recording to VCR as a 'dual record' standby along with your DVDR. Rgds, Scorp |

Thanks all
Thanks guys
Tried Fat Controllers suggestion and managed to record / watch freeview and analogue and vice versa with success!!! Also got rid of that split screen problem!! Still not sure i have the audio completly sorted and the analogue signal is crappy BUT generally can watch freeview and will have another look at the audio connections - maybe my leads are a bit pants! Didn't have much time to look at it all last night but thanks for all the help. Had figured i would just lose the VCR but hadn't thought about the posibility of bering able to record to DVD and VCR at the same time! not sure I want to mess with it to much now that i have it working!! Cheers

The phonos you have in place are fine for transferring the sound between devices but if you want all your devices to route sound through your DVD sound system (FV, VCR,DVDR) just connect a phono left/right pair from the TV phono out to the DVD sound system AUX phono in.
This will serve all your devices as it will route the sound that is accompanying the TV picture. Remember to use 'normal' DVD sound setting when playing DVDs (to give full DD 5.1 sound) and AUX for everything else. Also, remember to turn the sound off on your TV. Rgds, Scorp |

slight problem
Great idea about the phono leads - unfortunately all i have on the back of the TV are 2 scarts - which are in use!
I do have the red white and yellow on the front of the TV but was trying to avoid having a cable coming from the front. Just looks nicer if not - but may need to consider this option if I really want the amp sound. Cheers |

Glad you got going. If your analogue picture is stil crappy, then check your RF leads and make sure that the plugs are fitted correctly, no breaks an nothing loose. As for the sockets on the front of your TV, I would very much doubt that they would be outputs, on the vast bulk of sets these were IN-only.
If you have any decent independent retaillers nearby (preferably one with a workshop) then they might be able to piggy-bck a 2-phono spur onto the back of one plug of a SCART to SCART lead for you - a bit agricultural, but it works. |

Please help as I am a complete divvy as regards things with cables coming out of them. I wish to connect a cable receiver, dvd recorder and combi dvd player/ vcr to my tv which is not equipped with the 3-plug input (white/yellow/red) which my dvdr came supplied with. I hope this makes sense and I would appreciate any help.

Scart connections:
Cable box VCR scart ---> DVD/VCR in/out scart (prob AV2) Cable box TV scart ---> DVDR AV2 DVDR AV1 ---> TV AV1 this allows the cable to be recorded onto DVD or viewed through it on the TV AV1 setting you can play DVDs via the DVD/VCR as above or on the DVDR you can play VCRs as above to TV AV1 you may want to introduce another scart like this DVD/VCR AV1 ---> TV AV2 to watch VCRs if you are using the DVDR to record from Cable. RF (aerial) connections: Ext RF aerial ---> DVD/VCR RF in DVD/VCR RF out ---> DVDR RF in DVDR RF in ---> TV RF in This allows you to record analog TV on the VCR or on the DVDR. I assume you can connect the 'Cable' cable correctly, lol. Rgds, Scorp |
