Why should anyone have to defend a series we haven't even *seen* yet? There aren't even any screencaps or photos of it - let alone any episodes aired that we might make a decision about.

Too little is known about this series for someone to have to 'defend' it before it has even had the first episode aired.”

John Barrowman himself said that there will be sexual themes in this show when I saw him being interviewed on 'Des and Mel'..(I think it was 'Des and Mel' anyway).
He was taking about 'Torchwood' and 'Dancing on Ice'.

He said that his own character 'Captain Jack' wouldn't be too involved in some of the more adult themed stuff, due to his character's direct association with Doctor Who, with DW being a family oriented show, so his character is more toned down than some of the others in that respect......but he said that some of the other characters that his co-stars play get involved with some of the more steamy shenanigans.

I'm surprised that nobody here saw that interview with John Barrowman, and that I appear to be the only one who saw it.

Hmm. Buffy had a musical episode. Barrowman performs in musicals. I wonder...

I didn't see it, but he pretty much said the same on Richard and Judy

Nah, Jim - I wasn't quibbling your post.

I *was* querying the wording of the original report, however. 'Defends' seems entirely the wrong word to use - has anybody actually attacked the show? And if so, how can they possibly be taken seriously when we haven't seen anything of it yet?

Yes, I braved the 4 minutes or so of R&J to watch JB and he said the same, i.e. the need to keep Captain Jack 'clean' so that he could return to DW at a later date.

He spoke about 'Dancing on Ice' on R&J as well, AM - are you sure it wasn't that interview you watched and subconsciously blanked out R&J?

Just sent you a PM Den! It isn't too difficult to blank R&J.

Yes, actually that was probably where I saw the interview. In my above post I implied that there was a bit of doubt whether I saw it on 'Des and Mel' or not...but if you saw John Barrowman interviewed on 'Richard and Judy' like you say, then that may have been the actual show I watched instead of the one I mentioned.

It probably was R&J to be honest.

Probably more likely too as ITV seem to resent Doctor Who.
Who will no doubt come up with some brand new programme at the time to be scheduled directly against it and try to spoil the party.

[quote=DenWatts]It seems people have possibly read too much into the 'sexy' aspect mentioned by RTD - and now he wants to back away from that.[quote].

Couldn't he have meant "sexy" in the cringey modern vernacular sense of "slick, glossy and populist"????

He could.

I would have used the words slick, stylish (and populist)

If you ask me, he wasn't "defending it". He was simply clarifying the direction it is coming from.

Very different things.

Use whatever words you want, but not "sexy" as it could cause untold confusion...!

Its going to be Celebrity Bullseye on Ice, where contestanst have to skate away from people throwing darts at them. But if the Tardis lands on the rink, I might watch,

I have a sudden mental image of a squad of daleks ice skating in formation.

Would you want the Tardis to materialise over Bonnie Langford to save her?

I mentioned Bullseye as when Ant and Dec finish off their next take away, isn't their bit of Bully likely to be up against Dr Who?

I'm thinking that the safety circuits (the ones that prevent the tardis from materialising on top of people) should be out of action during that particular materialisation.

Personally I think they dug themselves into a bit of a hole with the description and the spin they have given Torchwood and are now frantically back peddling. RTD has been in this game long enough to know how the media/papers can distort things and as Den said if you mean something else then you should have said that in the first place.

I think they're knackered anyway Den - see The Parting of the Ways.

I agree that they may be regretting the language used in early publicity for Torchwood. I guess though that people are talking about it - better than not...

Perhaps JB and RTD back peddling is all part of the spin in getting people to talk about it more but they should remember what spin did for the Labour Party!

That was a special landing as well you know it, jim.

It certainly does seem look like it's got people talking about Torchwood - as you say, it can only be a good thing.

I would suggest something like Celebrity Bullseye on Ice (would they *really* need to have a dartboard? ) but I think there's a good chance that idea actually was thrown into the ring in one of the commissioning meetings.

Or Sh**tleen on Ice! Lets see how high ITV ratings go up then!
