Can anyone recommend a decent hifi system, with multi cd, tape and turntable? I've seen a few midi systems, but they're all pot ugly and silvery-plastic.

I don't want to spend a fortune, but would like something semi decent on which I can play ALL my music!

You're going to be pretty hard pushed to find any sort of half-decent all in one these days that actually still includes a turntable.

They're like hens teeth now. You'd probably be better off getting something that includes everything else (making sure it has inputs to spare) and then getting a cheapo turntable from somewhere like richer sounds.

What about this?

£250 odd gets you a decent basic system and if you can find someone selling it one of the consumer reviews mentions an optional turntable?

A decent system that doesnt cost a fortune?

Cyrus 6vs - amp
Cyrus CD6 (ignore mutlidisk players, they really arent up to standard)
Project Debut Phono- turntable
Denon DRR-F101 - cassette
Quad 12L - speakers
QED - cabling

Would be a fair system

Further to Astaroth's comments, if you want hi-fi you need separates. Even a bargain basement separates system will blow a similar priced mini or midi system clean out of the water. Make sure you get decent speakers.

I'd also agree that separates are the way to go but even budget separates, to get what the OP asked for, is going to set you back over £500.

If you only plan to use it in a bedroom or something, with people underneath you, then 8000 watts of floorstander maybe isn't an option.

Plus, it also sounded like they were looking for a pre-packed system.

So what sort of budget are we talking here 'cos "I don't want to spend a fortune" could mean £1000 to some people, or £200 to others ......

8000Watts? hell the cyrus system is only 50 W at 4 ohms.... dont mistake "expensive" or "seperates" as necessarily meaning loud... though I am sure that the cyrus could make a louder/ more controlled volume than most of these platic midi systems that claim to have 1000w RMS

Certainly knowing the actual budget would be useful.... I initentionally pitched a system higher than what I antisipate the OP wants to illustrate a point.

On possibly a more "i dont want to spend a fortune budget" you could probably look at getting Cambridge Audio equipment from Richersounds.com

The other benefit of seperates is you dont have to buy it all today. I am sure you can live without either a turntable or cassette deck for a couple of months so get an amp/ cd player/ speakers now to the best your money can stretch and add the others as and when you can afford them

LOL ... fair enough.

I know the floorstanders I use nowadays certainly wouldn't have gone down too well when I still lived at home with my parents .... never mind the subwoofer. I got evil enough looks from the other people in the stair (I was in a flat when I bought all my separates) when they saw me carrying all the boxes in.

You're right though, a budget setup from somewhere like Richer Sounds would be the way to go.

Having said that, the little pre-packed technics system I posted the link to does actually look like quite a nice little 'out of the box' system for £250 odd.

I would recommend separates too.
Most all-in-one units are micro sized now, with no turntable.
The midi sized ones seem to be poor quality now.
Maybe consider getting a second hand unit - better quality and black nicely styled casing.

I would go with Astaroth & andy_tech and recommend the seperates route.

It would be worth looking through the Hi-fi mags to check what they're reviewing. What Hi-fi? looked at single manufacturer CD/amp combinations with speakers last month, across different buget ranges, then when you've got an idea of what you want, arrange for a demo at a reputable hi-fi retailer.

I can only back up what has already been stated.

If you want a half decent hifi, with half decent tape, and turntable, go with seperates.

"Compact/all in one systems" with turntables are very thin on the ground now, and (from what I have seen), all low quality systems - and not just in terms of sound quality. Ironically, systems that have given up on turntables are quite good in Mini or even Micro form. Their sound quality and build quality had got a lot better in recent years and their big advantage is that you don't have many wires to deal with. Their disadvantage is that they can't be upgraded - so if you buught one with FM tuner, than wanted to add DAB radio, you would have to buy a brand new HIFI. I bought my seperates system 5 years ago and this was the main reason I made that choice, and I have changed the CD/DVD and radio tuner on it since having it, plus the computers now feeding its sound into it.

One last thing, never buy without trying it out first. Use the internet for the lower price, but always go and hear the equipment setupbefore hand.
