I have used the program 'DVD to pocket PC' to shrink the file but it only gives the option to save as a wmv file.
We are using psp xploder software to transfer to the PSP but it will not accept the file because it's not an mpeg file !
How do I convert the wmv file to a mpeg file (preferably free) so I can transfer to the PSP ?

You are more likely to get PSP answers on the PSP forum at Digital Spy but the bottom line is that convert video for PSP have a look at:

I've used both 3GP and PSP Video 9 successfully to convert video files to MPEG4 format and play on the PSP

If you use your wireless internet ability you can download a Sony PSP update that allows you to play WMA aswell as MP3.
Regarding the video.
For my sons PSP we have copied dvd to PC using dvd shrink,aswell as homemade videos,then we use PSP Video 9 to convert to MPEG 4 for transfer to PSP

Thanks mongosito, I used PSP video 9 last night and did the transfer but the lip sync is way out for some reason ?

It was WMA not WMV.
But if you update your PSP with the regular Sony updates it usually gives new features.
My sons was from japan and he says that sometimes new updates only work on non GB consoles for a while sometimes.
