Gladiator - Best DVD?
Chris Hunt
08-11-2000
We have a preview of Gladiator over at http://www.dvdnews.co.uk. This could be the best disc of the year but what do you think is the best DVD you've got this year?

... has to be another Ridley Scott creation, Alien.

Reasons: so much care went into restoring what was likely to be pretty grotty source material. For a film shot in 1978 the end result is impressive. The extras are, on the whole, everything a fan of the film would want.

And the stunning "fifth disk" documentary can still be got, for free, in a number of standalone Alien boxes (without the sequels) if you look closely enough...

I'm wating for my Gladiator and X men dvds to arrive next week!! This year has been great for DVD's!! Loads more extra features are arriving on DVD's (finally) and with more and more DVD 18's coming it's full steam ahead!! (a confession though is that most of the DVD's i buy are Region 1's and with RCE becoming more widespread it might become a problem, but someones bound to find a hack/chip for it!!)

Just a question though does anyone know why Gladiator is having a simultaneous R1 and R2 release and why is it out in england later than the VHS rental!!

(Does anyone know where i can buy the Ali G Aii video for less than £15?? Thanks)

Columbia Tristar for R2 are trying to always simultaneously release the R2 and R1 releases. Also they will always match (and hopefully in some cases beat) the extra content on the R1.

Ali G, Aiii is £14.99 at http://www.play247.com

Hope you've read the preview at http://www.dvdnews.co.uk (shameless plug!)

as far as i'm aware, the RCE system is a bit of a flop - it only mainly affects chipped auto-switching toshiba and region 0 players, while the majority (particularly manual switching) have no problems, or there is a fairly simple way of beating the system (such as directly accessing the required title, which a friend of mine has to do)

Chris, thanks but i already use play 247 (buy nearly all english titles from there) anybody know where i can get it cheaper?

Rezebelady: That's the problem, my sony 725D is an auto switching player so it probably is affected by the RCE coding Thankfully it's only the two columbia tristar titles that are affected. (perfect storm wasn't that good in my opinion anyway!!)

Oh, just in case anyone hasn't bought gladiator already, on open (sky digital) dixons online are selling it form £12.45 (wait for the slight catch, there is a £3 ish postage charge but still ~£15 is a good price delivered to your door for the 2 disc edition!!

It's actually only The Patriot and Thomas and the Magic Railroad that are RCE encoded so far - i've got The Perfect Storm, and it is not RCE.

I have a Paragon auto-switching modified Sony 725 which i have not checked - but i have a friend who bought exactly the same player with the same mod at the same time as me who does have The Patriot and it plays fine on his machine, so i have no reason to doubt that it will not affect mine either - would be nice to check for certain, but he now lives quite far away.

Actually, the only Sony machine that i have heard has had problems with RCE is the 735 - but this was where the mod used was quite a cheap one (i think they might of got around it somehow as well).

i was just browsing on another forum where i remembered seeing something more about the 725 and rce and found this -

Quote:
“Sony DVD players with just an auto or a manual (or auto/manual mod) are fine with RCE discs. The reason the tosh fails is due to the way the machine reports its region when asked. So anyone whom tells you a Sony with just a auto mod is not RCE compatable is wrong!
”

the guy who posted this works for a company called upgrade heaven, so i assume he knows what he's talking about.

Excellent. This means my Hong Kong import DVP-S505D might just work. This features the region auto detect mentioned.

I'll pick up a copy and find out later this week.

since posting that last quote, i've heard some not very good things about problems with the sony x35 series with multiregion autoswitching (particularly the 735 - nothing negative about the x25 series and have no idea at all about the 505, though) - from what i remember it was a particular type of mod that was the problem, but i can't remember where i read it

ok! - hope this settles it once and for all (for myself as much as anyone else!)

Quote:
“Just a point to make here, Any auto mod on the Sony X2X range (inc Sony DAVS300, F11, 850D) IS RCE FRIENDLY. It makes no difference if you have manual backup or not for this range of models due to how the disc interigates the player.

The machines you need auto with manual backup for are the Sony X3X range, as auto mods on these players work in eeprom only (not firmware as on older sonys).

Hope that helps!

I did actually, thanks for asking. Thankfully all appears to be fine.

A weight off my mind considering how well the player has served me over the last two years.
