Thomson DHD4000 Problem/Help needed

Hi

I purchased a DHD4000 from currys two weeks ago for the bargain price of £100.

It was marked as 'ex-repair'. hence the price.

When i got it home it was on for about an hour when for apparently no reason, it crashed. ie. random lights on the front panel, loss of picture and sound (the blocks it left on the screen reminded me of a spectrum loading screen).

So i reset at the plug, since nothing worked on the remote. After a couple of minutes, it happened again with different lights on, and this has been the continuing problem.

It's software is 1.7.7.

So, I rang Thomson's tech support and the guy there said it sounded like a reception problem, BUT, the quality and strength bars in the info were showing between 5 and 8 on ALL channels. While I realise this is not ideal, I have two other freeview boxes and they both show full signals from my loft mounted wideband high gain arial and dont even get blips, I told him it was 'ex-repair' and he said that was unlikely as currys do not have the contract to repair them (it was definately used before as there was writing in the instruction book.. ;.so have currys just put a faulty return back on the shelf??? (is this legal?)

I decided not to invest 120 quid in a new roof mount aerial and take it back to currys to get a replacement......... PROBLEM... discontinued product... none anywhere in the country... they could only offer me a refund (but at 100quid I doubt i would get one elsewhere) and decided to keep the box, until i work out what to do.

I'd like some advice really as to what people suggest i do next.... is it definatly reception?????? thing is... i don't know of anyone with a roof mount wideband aerial that i can test it with........

Dont wanna give up a bargain and would definately invest in an aerial if i could be guaranteed this would solve it.

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE.

It could be signal-related but also could be faulty, heat related maybe? Why not try and leave it "on" but not connected to the aerial see if it crashes then.

If it were me though I'd return it no matter how much a bargain - you have no idea what the long-term reliability of the unit will be
