...that no longer has such creatures in it.
I loved BB3, but having now emerged once again, blinking, into the daylight, I'm so glad it's over for another year. As in the previous two years, I can't quite believe that I focused so much time and energy on it, and that I actually cared so much about the way they behaved, and who won.
Don't get me wrong: I 'm not ashamed of my Big Brother habit, and I've no time for those who regard it as a symptom of the dumbing down of our culture. It's basically a story, a narrative, with good guys and bad guys, and the human species has been hooked on that kind of entertainment since shortly after we developed the capacity for symbolic thought. And if you look at Greek and Latin literature, there's plenty of vomiting at parties in Petronius, and many unspeakably rude things in the comedies of Aristophanes...
It's brilliant entertainment, but what I can't quite fathom is why, when it's going on, did we all care so much about these characters? Many of the exchanges between diehard fans of Alex and Jonny on these threads were vitriolic, to say theleast, and I myself was guilty of being a fervent Jonny-basher.
But when I saw Davina interview him, it seemed as if the spell was broken, and I couldn't think why I'd loathed him quite so much. He seemed a nice enough sort of chap - OK a bit of a piss artist, but someone who loves his parents and holds down a difficult and worth while job, and was clearly deeply embarrassed to find out that the entire population does not pee in the shower and eat their toenails in public. And he even had something nice to say about Alex.
Ah well - until next year, I'll be enjoying the next fifty weeks of freedom...
