One of my work colleagues told me about this the other day - he used to work for 4TV so knows a few things about the DHD4000.

Hidden menu:
You need to go to the technical info menu (you know, the one that displays the tuner info and SW version number) and type 2,8,4,6 (within 5 secs).

Loads of logging tools, hard disk temperature stuff and the ability to format your HDD all within the UI.

Pretty cool.

Be careful with some of the items though!

I thought it might have a secret advent calendar for the release of updated software...

First question then, now that this holy grail has been discovered - does the HDD temperature show as 100degC on anyone elses? System temperature shows as 31degC.

I've got an upgraded HDD in there.

How would you access the "logging" files do you think? I suppose you'd have to pull the disk out and read a debug file. Be nice if it could display on screen though!

Wonder if the same code works on the Fusion box?

My hardisk is at 230 degrees, do I win a prize for the highest temp?

My hardisk is at 31 degrees

my HD is 41 degrees, the box is sitting on it's own shelf in an AV stand and has the original HD.

Maplin sells a Hard Disk especially designed for PVRs. The temperature never goes above 70 degrees plus the power load is reduced.
160F=GB at £150 is expensive though.

Methinks DIY upgrades may need some 'cool' ingenuity to have staying power.

Have you got a link to this hard disk. Had a quick browse on Maplin's site but couldn't find it.

Its Maplin Part Number A08FJ. Put that in the 'Search' box in the top right of the screen on their home page and it will take you straight to the product page.

Does look expensive though.

My HD is showing 36 degrees, the unit alone on top shelf of TV stand, room temperature is 20 degrees.

Nice one. Looks like you may be able to turn the EPG download off which would be usefull when going away on holiday - avoids crashes?

My HDD is at 32 deg - it's a 7200 rpm drive in an open stand in a room that is cool most of the time.

Looks like you can display a log file from the UI once it has been created.

Set the logging going last night - the only event that seemed to have been logged was the OAD download. I had a full 14 days worth of EPG so I wasn't expecting to see any error reports, and there were none.

I wonder why my disk mis-reports the temperature though?

Same here, though it's quite interesting seeing the various stages of the OAD. I imagine it will be more useful for those suffering OAD problems. Hopefully there will be some useful error details.

Not all disks support reporting temperature. If you see silly numbers it probably means your disk is one that does not.

Unit temp 36 degrees,
HDD temp 39 degrees (same as the HDDs in my PC)

mine is 37 degrees for the record....pity it doesn't tell you if an update is comming :P

my hdd is 253 degrees c, surely a mistake... can I use it too make tea?

...it doesn't feel very hot to touch though.

Is there anything worth changing? I switched error correction to macroblocks from freezeframe... I'll wait for a moped to see what happens.

Over-the-Air Download...

Having changed this too, I've found that rather than "skipping" through interference on recordings, it now plays through at normal speed, just with some colourful patterns on the screen instead (although it will still skip really bad sections).

It certainly improves 'watchability' IMHO so I will be staying in "Macroblock" mode!

Changing the "Override OAD" and "Delete old EPG" settings doesn't appear to do anything. At least if you change them the old EPG still gets deleted and the EPG download still happens. Unless there's an incantation involved or they only work in certain scenarios or they don't actually do what I assume they might.

Looks like it's back to the timer switch to stop the EPG when I'm away.......

Had Yellow light on this morning, it just needed unpluging to get it going again.
I have the logging on and instead of the usual 13 pages its logged 331 pages.
Everything is normal until page 11 after "OADS: EPG download started" on page 10, It says "EIT:CRC failure"on page 11
Followed by "EIT offset of 4095 > lenght of 3748" on page 12
then repeats with slightl;y different numbers for offset land lenght until 03:38 am page 330, the next entry is when I turn off the power and back on 10:14 were it reset itself for another download tonight.
Don't know if it will be any help to anybody having crash problems, I have never had full YLD but had a few partial ones and one with lots of light on, I have a 120 HD fitted for almost a year now

Just found a log for the 02/09/04 ,3 pages
1.TotUpdateTask - getting time from tuner 1 (was 1)
2.PVR _Tidyup - Deleting buffer file - Buff1.pes
3.PVR _Tidyup - Deleting buffer file - Buff0.pes
I know I had deleted the logs two days ago so I should image the date on the log is because it had been reset with the power off and it gets the time and cleans buffers.

^^^ Cool stuff. It's telling you that something called an Event Information Table is corrupt, indicated by a Cyclic Redundancy Check failure - a big sum is done on all the bits and the result should be zero. Since it's pretty unlikely to be corrupted at source, I'm guessing that somehow the bits have got mangled during reception, probably due to interference or a weak signal. It also suggests that it isn't the software's fault, a bug or a crash.

I just happened to be reading about this stuff, I'm no expert, so apologies to any gurus if i've got it wrong..
