Hi, I'm not that well informed were TVs are concerned, and my mother in law is looking to me for advice.
She's bought a Panasonic TX26LXD50, and is very happy with it except for the picture from her DVD/Video combination.
It's a Sony, and it's only about 6 months old so I wouldn't have thought there would be any incompatibility there.
I've had a look round on the internet and all the reviews for the TV rave on about how good the picture is.
It's got 4 scart sockets, and I've tried connecting the DVD to all of them. I've tried cheap scart cables, and more expensive gold plated ones (cost about £20, not sure if that's a lot or a little - felt like a lot).

It's not helped by the fact that they get a poor aerial reception where they live, so they're actually not seeing a good picture in any mode.

Any ideas - any help would be much appreciated.

Is the picture poor when playing a 'bought' DVD?

Yes. It's terrible on a bought or copied DVD, and also a bought or home recording Video.

Hardly any difference between either.

Looks like very poor reception.
Hazy, half snow storm, blocky.
Looks like it's not tuned in properly in essence.

LCD TV's are of a higher screen resolution than a normal CRT tube TV. This means that the TV scales the picture to the resolution of the set. If it is fed a bad signal you will get a bad signal out. Even with a good signal the picture can look poor due to the resizing of the picture. If you are only using analogue reception from your aerial on a widescreen TV this will also distort the picture if the set is set to widescreen.
Connect you DVD/Vidoe combi to scart socket 1 on the TV which should be RGB. Set the DVD/Video combi to RGB in the menu system and the same with the TV. The manuals should help you with this. This should give you a good picture for DVD and Video. Use a fully wired scart lead. Gold plated is of no benefit unless the sockets you are plugging into are also gold plated which they are not.
You should look at getting a new aerial as this will probably help the most. LCD TV's are notoriously bad with poor reception.
I would also check out www.avforums.com and do a search in the LCD thread about your set and see if other people have posted there settings or ask for other peoples setting unless you are confident to go into the menu system and adjust the contrasr, brightness yourself.
In the meantime turn off or down the digital processing of the set like DNR etc, refer to the manual for help and this should help you.
Stick with it as when sorted you should have a good picture.

Thanks a lot for the info - will go round tomorrow and try all that out.
Step 1 is likely getting the fully wired Scart lead.

If you bought a new lead for £20 i would say it's fully wired already. It's only the realy cheap stuff that's not.
