Level 42
I have come across a lot of this very much of their time 80's electro-pop band's work in recent years and even ended up buying their ultimate collection. They have half a dozen songs that I would consider very good and another half dozen that are there or thereabouts in my opinion.
They have some truly appalling videos but the one for Something About You has the lead singer on a train imagining the lives of the three people he is in the coach - old train - with who are played by members of the band. Cherie Lunghi of the famour Nescafe ads plays the female who he sees them all with. Anyone got anything interesting to say/comment about this band? |

That is a terrible video, but Cherie's appearance makes it watchable. I'm sure I have that song somewhere...

They started out as an instrumental jazz-funk band before heading towards commercial acceptance. Mark King was/is an amazing bass player. I had a friend who was well into them in the 80's. My fave was always "Hot Water", especially the intro.

I think 'Running in the Family' is one of the great 80's records.

I once bought a Level 42 T-shirt, but was subsequently too ashamed to wear it in public.

My dad used to love them, Level 42 were always the soundtrack to any car journey with him (unless I managed to get George Harrison's Cloud Nine in the tape player instead).
'It's over' is a really good song (in my memory, it must have been fifteen years since I last heard it). Didn't Mark King insure his thumb for a million pounds? |
