I just got a 250 gb Toppy and so far I'm really impressed.
The build quality is great and it has done everything I asked, in particular it also records Radio

The manual has a few strange phrases clearly the result of translation, on page 48 it has a paragraph.

Zapping while Recording
For the tuner being recorded with, all the services in the same service can be selected. For the other tuner, all the scanned services can be selected.

What does this mean?

Zapping usualy means switching channels doesnt it? - like your remote is some kind of phaser from star trek.

I think it sounds like the manual is trying to explain that a tuner is capable of recording one channel, and also showing another channel for watching; as long as both channels are within the same Mux.

I understand the manual isnt the best, not that they usually are!

I think the Toppy Manual is a particularly outstanding example of the genre however. It would appear to have been translated from the original Korean (or possibly Vulcan) into English by someone who was not actually familiar with either language or indeed with watching television. I suspect they used one of those little dictionaries carried by tourists.

PS My manual has a slightly different but equally inane version of the same explanation and I agree with marc’s translation.

Rest assured, a new manual is being written, which should make the present grisly effort little more than an unpleasant memory.

My manual says r.3. I think the one at Topfield is r.4 but I can't find any difference except some colour.

Maybe Zapping refers to the Teletext and interactive functions, and that is what they mean by 'the service'

I'll experiment tonight and also try the uk Toppy Site. which is great but looks like a forum for 'highly technical' folk.

Mine has the latest firmware (5.12.25) so I wonder if some of the Taps are now so attractive or neccesary.

Don't worry - we have a special section just for new users on the Toppy site, and everyone's welcome. It's true some of the members have done some pretty techy stuff with theirs, but you should find lots of stuff whatever your level of expertise.

I understood Zapping to be the unique (well almost as the Humax now does the same) feature that, even when you're recording two different channels you can also watch a third as long as:

a) it's on the same mux as one of the recorded channels

or

b) the two channels you are recording are on the same mux in which case you can watch any other channel at the same time - damn clever that one, it cleverly only uses the one tuner to record the two programs!

Now that is an answer that is worth a lot... it is a feature that deserves much more publicity.......and a deeper explanation.
Maybe an online 'advanced' guide would help but I guess the web site provides that.. Such a shame that the particular technical features of the Toppy are so embedded in such a manual.
Having spent a lot on a transformer for my aerial amplifier I noticed that the Toppy can feed 9v to power it anyway!

I also note that some of the Hi Fi reviews of the Toppy miss out so much and get quite a lot wrong.....many thanks. But I think I may be back. We live in an area with a lot of power cuts and I don't think the problems associated with that have been resolved.

A pretty good peice of Korean engineering and very generous with it's featuresand flexibility.... now why can't we Brits do that!
