Playing Region 2 dvds in U.S.
If anyone could help me I would be extremely grateful. I am moving to the U.S. in the coming months and was wondering if I would be able to play my region 2 PAL dvd's on a U.S. HDTV set. I know it's not possible via a NTSC set. I know that I will need a new multi region dvd player. I have one already, but am guessing that I cannot buy a transformer to bump up the 110v to the required 220v to operate the player. Hopefully I may be wrong though.
Any other info that you could offer would be of great benefit. Many Thanks, Trev. |

You can indeed get 110 to 240 transformers. Get yourself a copy of this months What Hi-Fi and Video and look in the bottom right corner of page 103. they answer this very same question (regarding transformers).
They suggest an alternative though which may be of interest. Contact the manufacturer's service department and find out the availability and pricing of having the DVD player converted to 110. Most companies apparently can and will do this in genuine cases. The next problem will be converting PAL to NTSC. Keene.co.uk may be able to help you there. A far cheaper (and easier) option would be to use a PC connected to you HDTV (lucky so and so) and use that to play R2 DVD's. Every PC I have seen can be converted to 110 v by a flick of a switch on the power unit. That way you would not need to worry about PAL to NTSC. Regards, G |
