I don't think the reasons are shallow at all. People are empathising with Preston's girlfriend. Putting themselves in her shoes.
As she's lived with him for two years, it's surely not unreasonable to assume that she loves him. And she's seeing what we're seeing, presumably.
I don't think that any of us would like it if our partner, being locked up in a house for 3 weeks, incommunicado, started flirting, cuddling, and groping an attractive member of the opposite sex at every opportunity.
The fact that Preston has done this gives us a very viable reason to dislike him, because it infers that he has a perfidious nature.
