It's hard not to come to the conclusion that a lot of the interest surrounding Adele stems from her bi-sexuality. While male homosexuality is more accepted than it used to be there still seems to be a lot of (to be polite) perplexity (and a certain wayyhayy reaction) to gay/bi female sexuality - hence, two pages devoted, again, to Adele's perceived two-facedness which seems to be being linked, albeit subconsciously, to the fact that she 'swings both ways' sexually as well. I mean if a woman does that how can she be 'straight' about anything, seems to be the thinking.
I keep being reminded of Brian last year. As now, there was a similar debate/curiosity about his ambiguous answers re his sex life, i.e. scrutiny of the dates he gave about when he last had sex and if he was lying. It would be easy to conclude that gay people are just naturally deceitful but the more likely answer is that they are just acutely aware of the public’s probable reaction to their gayness. Hence, both Brian and Adele’s attempts to emphasise themselves as ‘not very sexual people’, fully knowing that although the gbp can accept ‘gay’ as an abstract category they balk at having to think about the specifics of gay sex. Given this it’s not really surprising to find many inconsistencies in their answers. Of course you could just call them liars or more sympathetically try to understand that they were just trying to defend themselves from too much distaste from the gbp, as well as mitigate any embarrassment to their families. Personally I would like to congratulate them for their courage and candour rather than submit them to prurient interest.
Its been interesting to listen to all the legalities of whether Adele is a virgin which just seems another pretext to establish whether Adele is a liar, again - or legally committing perjury since we seem to be taking her to a court of law. (Should we perhaps do the same for PJ to seek the veracity of HJ v. BJ.) Personally I have no problem with Adele's description of herself as a bi-sexual virgin – i.e. its possible to be very sexually active without penetration, as other posters have tried to point out. It’s also possible that Adele is alluding to the popular understanding of virgins (not having had sex with a man). As to the legalities of heavy petting, i.e. penetration by fingers, I find it funny to think how many women had a clue as to the state of their hymen (and quite frankly who cares) when they described themselves, or not, as a virgin. So why are we getting so pernickety and legalistic about Adele? It just seems that having exhausted all other reasons for why Adele is ‘a nasty piece of work’ people are just looking at new reasons to hate her by picking at the minutiae of her every comment about her sexuality. I just think Adele was too complex a housemate for the simplicity of some people’s thinking.
