HDTV Help

My 28" Panasonic CRT TV is dying and needs replacing. I don't get new TV's very often so i suppose it would make more sense to get a HDTV ready for SKYHD. But my problem is that every forum i read seems to say "HD LCD's are rubbish for displaying current TV broadcasts, the picture is all grainy etc etc and at the moment it's only worth getting once if you use a xbox 360" . I don't play any games at all. I only use a TV for watching TV. So if i upgrade to a LCD HDTV will i have to put up with a crap picture until sky released HD ?? Budget is around £1000 for the TV.

Thanks !!

It won't give you HD programes but I would make sure when spending £1000 on a TV that it has built in Freeview.

I'd try and read a few reviews and look at some sets in the shops. Some are going to be better at it than others.

I don't believe that it's a problem with Sky with an RGB connection and most of the channels, such as Sky's own channels

Excellent post. Most LCD TVs with built in Freeview contain technology that can enhance Freeview's picture quality (my friend has a 32" Philips LCD with Pixel Plus, the SD via FV is superb).

My only regret at buying my LCD now is that it doesnt have FV built in.. mind you we cant get FV here... hmm.

Is SD what TV's broadcast in at the moment? And is that all TV's (LCD, PLasma, CRT)?

Yep. Standard definition is Pal or NTSC. What the vast majority of broadcasting is being done as at the moment.

The TV you have doesn't have anything to do with what's broadcast. Right now there's only Pal (ie SD) being broadcast in this country aside from Telewests HD trials.

In line with previous, I would suggest you would probably be happy with a good quality LCD with freeview, try looking at one in a shop where you can get the freeview to work and it will give you a good idea of what you can expect - LCD is different but it's a case of swings and roundabouts, some things look better, some a bit worse.

You should get used to an LCD fairly quickly and wonder why you ever had a big box with a small screen................

Thanks !!”

For a ready-made thread of replies I suggest that you go to AV Forums, find 'LCD TV's' and scroll to 'Anyone else holding off for a while'.
