If it is a new install then it is a 12 month contract.
If there is already a line in the house, then it is a 3 month contract, doesn't matter whether you have had BT there before, as long as someone has, and this isn't a new home and you are the first people to move in and have BT.
Either way, it doesn't mean you can't use other providers for your calls, just you line rental must stay with BT. (Which is the wise thing to do anyway).
Has that changed recently then? When I moved in to my flat (nearly 6 years ago), I signed up for BT and had to commit to a 12 month contract. There was already a line in place that had been connected in the past.

Possibly. Connection used to cost quite a bit too. It's def 3 months now.
A 12 month contract would impose an additional cost non "poor people" in rented accommodation. Maybe that's why there is a change.
