I'm looking to get a new LCD TV for Sky HD and was wondering how important the HDMI socket really is.

The two I'm looking at are

The Acer one is £40 cheaper but doesn't have a HDMI port (it does have DVI with HDCP)

Should I just cough up the extra money for the extra connections and samsung brand name?

DVI with HDCP is fine. Only difference is DVI doesn't carry digital audio.

I think so, it'd cost you at least £20 for the HDMI-DVI converter

It would be worth checking out the LCD section in the AVForums, you should fine a few people who have direct experience with either of the two displays.

LCD performance can vary so wildly that just looking at the spec or even brand in some cases may not be a good guide

Does the Samsung TV have an HDMI socket as I can't see it listed in the specification on the Dabs site or on the Samsung site?

The Samsung site lists the following connections:

Terminal Digital Interface (HDMI-HDCP, DVI Compatible) - 1EA (my emphasis)
RF - 1EA
Scart - 2EA
Component (Y/Pb/Pr) - 1EA
Video In - 1EA
S-Video In - 1EA
PC Input (D-Sub) - 1EA
PC Audio In - 1EA
Audio Out - 1EA
Headphone Out - 1EA

Although the reviews from people say it does have an HDMI socket!!

Surely Samsung are saying it does have an HDMI port?

Doesn't "Terminal Digital Interface (HDMI-HDCP, DVI Compatible)" mean it has an HDMI-HDCP port that is DVI Compatible?

That's what I would take it to mean anyway.

I dont see the point in getting a tv for SkyHD without a HDMI port, if thats the connection they will use then you would need to get a hdmi tv surely?

Well its newer, so its marginally preferrable. But since DVI is electrically identical, you are OK with anything with an HDCP enabled DVI port as well.

So it wouldn't be worth paying a lot more just for an HDMI connector, nor worth getting an inferior TV, just because it had an HDMI connector whereas another TV didn't.

As a matter of interest, I do it the other way around. I take a DVI output from my PC and run it into the HDMI input on my projector. All I needed was a cable with a DVI plug on one end and an HDMI plug on the other. It works fine.
