Hi there, I am probably the millionth person to ask the question, but I am hoping somebody may be able to help.

I have just taken the plunge and bought a HDD DVDR to allow me to transfer my recordings from my Sky+ and subsequently on to disk for archiving….I think I may have the set up kind of right but not too sure….I have my doubts because when I play back the HDD, the sound is coming out of the telly rather than my DVD Surround sound and it appears that when the DVDR is switched on, everything routes through this which I guess would mean If I am transferring from the HDD to the DVDR (archiving) I would have to be watching (I know this is the case if I am transferring from Sky+ to the HDD).….so I’d be grateful if somebody could point me in the right direction.

Kit is as follows:

Plasma TV - 2 scarts
DVD player - 1 scart ( this is a 5.1 surround sound system so want to keep this in the loop to maintain the sound set up (I use this all the time and keep the volume on the TV down))
Sky+ - 2 Scarts
HDD DVDR - 2 scarts

I should say, whether relevant or not, that I don’t have a separate RF lead as I only take the feed from Sky+

Thanks in advance for any help.

Mark

Connect your SCARTS as follows:

Sky+ AV1 --> DVDR AV1

DVDR AV2 --> TV AV1

DVD Player --> TV AV2

You are correct in thinking that you have to watch when you are archiving from Sky to DVDR. When you are archiving from the HDD in the DVDR to DVD you should be able to do this at high speed which will negate the need to watch it.

As for your surround sound, if you want 5.1 on Sky+ and on DVDR playback, you will need to connect each of then to your amp with optical cables (assuming your amp has the sockets spare).

Does your plasma have two RGB scarts or just one?

If it has two then connect as fat controller says.

If it only has one RGB enabled then connect as per fat controller but put the DVD player into Sky VCR scart, this will let you play RGB through the Sky.

Make sure RGB, scart control etc is enable everywhere.

Also consider using a digital video connection between DVD or DVDr and screen if both have HDMI/ DVI

Thanks all...the plasma has 2 scarts (I take it thats what you mean by RGB) and will need to check the optical cables on the amp...
I will give the set up a try and see how I get on...I have started to transfer the archiving from Sky+ to the HDD of an evening...set it running just before I go to bed and let it do it's thing.

The one thing the instructions for the DVDR don't seem to show is the High speed dub to DVD...tried it last night as per the instructions and it was transferring in real time...I stopped it as soon as I realised so will need to look in to this again.

Thanks again for the advice..I will report back on my progress.

Kind regards

Mark

AV2 is normally the input scart on a DVDR and will be able to support RGB in (which AV1 may not).

I would try

Sky+ AV1 --> DVDR AV2
DVDR AV1 --> TV AV1
