Replacement stylus for a Sony turntable
Hi all,
I've got a Sony turntable that's not been used in about 6 years. It's great and has a really good sound, so I'm keen to replace the stylus at last. I've searched online and there's places doing them for between £10 and £22. I'm not that clued up on them - are there different qualities of stylus? Is there going to be a difference between a £10 and a £22 one? Are Raleigh Hifi/Richer Sounds likely to stock them? Many thanks! |

I'm no expert, but I think most cartidges on domestic turntables, if they are off the same type, (m oving magnet), use the same stylus. My Sony took the same stylus as my Bush player.
Try your local Sony store to check. |

It very much depends on the turn table. My old one was part of an "all in one" hifi by JVC and it was simply the stylus that needed to be replaced but I had to get the correct "shape" for it. The local hifi store had 3 brands which did the correct one but their opinion was that the cheap catridge in the tone arm which couldnt be replaced didnt warrent paying anything more than the cheapest.
On my new seperates turn table the cartridge was bought seperately to the unit and has to be replaced as a whole - the stylus doesnt detatch from it. The advantage is that I was able to use any cartridge I want to, the disadvantage is that cartridges are massively more expensive than just the stylus (mine cost £200 after a discount) |
