can someone tell me what would you see if you had a french TV and tried to watch it in england, and vice versa.

is it true that although you would get no sound or colour, you would get a black and white picture though ?

99% of the time it would work fine. For the most part, manufacturers try to make one model across all of Europe these days, so most TVs support SECAM as well as the various regional types of PAL.

If it is a bog standard tv then you'd probably get just a black n white picture and no sound as you say. Most multi standard sets would be fine. A set with scart connections would also work with a device (sat cable etc) connected.

I used to watch a lot of secam programming on satellite before I got a set capable of displaying it in color.

hi basically, what it is i have bought an old 1980's computer off ebay, it was designed for france.

however as the picture is monochrome and there is no sound so thats not an issue.

i'm not sure what the output is till i get it.

but on the assumption that it is secam, then hopefully it shouldnt be a problem if the B/W signal is displyed on my TV.

a possibility is that its actually a pal output because, despite if being made for the french market, the computer is actually UK made, so if secam sytems can display B/W without sound from pal, then as the sytem had no sound or color anyway then the UK manufacturer would have been able to get without changing the RF modulator.

if its help i have been informed that the output is on UHF 36

I'd go for the "plug it in and see" approach!

While most tv's(and VCR's) will display NTSC,its not the same for SECAM.
If you check, there are very few tv's that will display SECAM in colour.
Having said that, there are very few SECAM broadcasts left on satellite, and with DVD there is no problem as French dvd's play as PAL anyway
