American vs British bands
If you had to choose who would you side with.
ive just been looking through some of my cd collection and found i only had about 6 albums by british bands(coldplay, gomez, doves etc) and at least 30 or more by american bands(counting crows, marcys playground, rhcp etc) Does anyone else favour the u.s to u.k market? |

I think genre is quite important here. Hip Hop/R &B is best done by the Americans. No British act comes close to the likes of 50 Cent, Justin Timberlake, Pharrell etc.
But with Rock music I think thr Brits can hold their own. Green Day are huge but Oasis and Coldplay are just as popular. |

Ultimately it depends on one or two things as to which bands you prefer. I happen to like a mix of thw two... Funeral For A Friend Panic! At The Disco Three Days Grace (who are incidently Canadian) The market's open to more countries then the US and the UK. On the other hand I see your point in that the UK market is generally dominted by US artists. Not because they are better or more talented (in fact it's quite often the opposite) but with the Starbucks generation taking over the UK, we can't help but become AmericaniZed. |

I have a fairly even split. As was mentioned, both countries seem to do certain things better. Hip-hop being a prime example, although I like how some of the UK contingent put out more gritty work, as opposed to the polished to death effect of some American R'n'B acts.
Indie rock, I think the UK has the advantage. That may just be because I'm not as exposed to the US market, but still. The US does big, balls-out rock a lot better for me. There's nobody over here who does the SOAD, Audioslave, Chilis kind of thing for me. |

most of the bands i like are American. I'm mainly a heavy rock/metal fan and whilst the Brits were mainly responsible for starting the genre (Sabbath, Priest, Zep), the Brit bands now tend to copy the American ones, bands like Metallica, Pantera, Korn, Rage Against The Machine have all been very successful so a lot of bands seemed to copy their styles.
On the UK side Panic Cell are promising, and seem to be attracting some good promotion now, which of course is another problem for bands to try and get. Plus of course radio over here very rarely plays metal during the day, so any up n coming bands find it difficult to get heard anyway other that gigging. |

I have a fairly even mix I think.. I like a very wide range of music, and I agree that there are some genres that the British do better and some that the Americans do better..
e.g. with indie we had Radiohead, Mansun, Manic Street Preachers, Gene etc.. they had... nothing with grunge/stoner rock they had Alice In Chains, Smashing Pumpkins, Hole, Kyuss, Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden we had... Bush...
